Travel Insurance

Any recs for it? We're going to be on bare minimun interim health insurance so we want to do it in case something unhappy happens

Marissa, I just read something on Yahoo about travel insurance being something that people waste money on.

I don't know how I feel about travel insurance.  I know that if Steve and I decided to go on a trip to Jamaica during hurricane season I might be extremely tempted to get insurance but at the same time that insurance adds on at least $100 or more that could be crucial to my budget.  I don't know I'm just kind "wishy washy" when it comes to it.  :)  But I just wanted to share that article I read  yesterday.

I am confused:  are you talking about health insurance for when you travel or are you talking about in case you can't go on the trip?

I don't have any recs for independent travel insurance companies, but I wanted to chime in that I thought it was worth the $50 we paid for travel insurance for our honeymoon.  Our honeymoon was in the middle of the swine flu hype, so we wanted to make sure that either we could cancel the trip or that we had some assurance of health coverage in Mexico if we were unlucky enough to get the flu during our trip.

Depending on the cost, it may not be worth it depending on where you're going and what you're doing.  If you've got adventure tours lined up, health coverage might be more of a consideration than if you're just sitting on a beach.

Sorry, I should have clarified--we're talking more about extra health/accident coverage. I'm not really worried about a random hurricane in Hawaii or something, just extra coverage if one of us got hurt or really sick. I need to check, but I believe our parents health insurance ends when we get married, and I don't get insurance from my job until I start in July. We're going to get interim insurance, but the deductable will be so high we cant really use it unless one of us is dying.

Maybe it is a waste of momey--I don't know!

Alana--yup, we plan to go parasailing and snorkeling, and there is this rock at Waimea Bay I plan to jump off!

I would call your interim and see what you do in case you get hurt while you are there.  Since it's still in the USA, you'll be better off than if you're in Europe and having to deal with insurance.  However, since you are doing some activities, you might actually really want to have it.  I would be worried too about something happening.  However, you couldn't pay me enough to do some of that though--I'm scared of heights!

It's always good to have insurance. You won't believe the costs of somethings. I might be bais because I work in Healthcare, but I see the worst cases here. You can try to call up your insurance company and see if they will extend your insurance for a month or something. It's hard to find a plan that will just cover you for a month or so. Normally they want you to be a member longer then that.
