Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Whats your ceremony music?

Hi girls,  I'm having an outdoor wedding with a trio (violin, piano, cello) playing.  I think they are a bit limited in music and was wondering what suggestions anyone had! Thanks!

Awesome instruments trio!  I'm having a string quartet at my outdoor wedding.  You can probably find the "traditional" wedding music (like Pachebel's Canon, Bach's "Jesu Joy of Man's Desire," etc) for all sorts of arrangements and instrumentations.  You might be able to even google it and find pdfs!

It's when you want more unique things that it might be difficult to find arrangements.  You could always find a piano arrangement of a song (try to find an edition that has chords), and that way all three instruments could play off of the same music... the cello could play the bass line, and the violin could play the melody, and piano could fill in with chords.  Or do variations of that.  (This of course means that the musicians need to be pretty flexible.)

You could also find someone to arrange songs for you.  (I'm arranging some songs for the string quartet at my wedding.)

    Hope that helps!

    Hi!
My fiance and the wedding party are walking to Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland, I am walking to Morning Mood by Grieg. Our recessional is Hoe-Down from Rodeo, then leading into Paul Simon's Kodachrome.

    Good luck!

I am the most excited about my processional song, "Three Flights Up" by Yellowcard. It's a beautiful instrumental song that is not too long but rather sweet. I love it because it's not a typical wedding song, but still has a romantic feel. It would sound great with your trio performing! Check it out...

I'm having my church band... I've been playing with them for 10 years, and I am so happy to have them!!  (Since I'm Catholic) We are using non-secular music, but it's still going to rock.  I don't have all the composers down yet, but here's the list of what we have so far:

    Prelude:
    God Unlimited
    Breathe
    This Love

    Entrance Rite:
Reverie - Claude Debussy (piano solo)
Le Cygne - Charles Saint-Saens (piano and flute duet)
Gloria, Gospel Acclaimation, & Eucharistic Acclaimation - L. Strom (he's our pianist!)

Psalm: Every Morning in Your Eyes - R. Cooney

Unity Candle: The Wedding Song - P. Stookey

    Eucharist:
Wherever You Go - G. Norbet
The Servant Song - R. Gillard
    Enough - C. Tomlin

Recessional: Find Your Wings - M. Harris

    Postlude:
You Are Mine - D. Haas (because my mom likes it... and Haas is one of the most awesome people I've ever met)
    Amazed - J. Anderson

You could always get just the piano to play a solo if you want something in particular or the same with just the cello and violin.  If there is a song you really want, try to find the sheet music.  They will more likely be willing to learn a new song if you supply the music.  I am having a piano doing Pachelbel's Canon in D, Bach's Prelude in C from the Well-Tempered Clavier, and then the Marriage Theme song from Disney's Up.

I totally stole Apocalyptica doing Metallica's 'nothing else matters' from another bride here on the boards for my walk down the aisle. Check them out on youtube.  See if you can find instrumental versions of your favorite songs or bands.  We might even quote the song in our programs.

you hired musicians without knowing what you wanted them to play? that seems a little backward.  we hired a pianist because we had selected piano pieces for our ceremony.  anyway i'm sure if you ask them they can provide a suggested playlist.

I had the bridal party walk down the aisle on 2 instrumental songs from "The Notebook"

I walked down the aisle to "At Last"

Ceremony songs were "When God Made You" by Natalie Grant and Newsong. The second song was "A Page Is Turned" by Bebo Norman

Bride and Groom left the ceremony on "Signed, Sealed and Delivered"

Wedding party left on "The Notebook" songs

I'm not completely sure what we're doing yet. FI's bandmate is the most talented musician I have ever met, I'm just not sure if I want to have him play piano or acoustic guitar. If he's playing piano I'm going to walk down the aisle to the song "Sometimes I Just Go For It," it's a very beautiful instrumental song by The Used. Otherwise we'll just have him play a few of our favorite songs on acoustic guitar. I'm very excited for the ceremony music, I know it's going to turn out beautifully!

Good luck finding songs for your ceremony! If all else fails, instrumental versions opf your favorite songs would be neat!

You should check out The Vitamin String Quartet. They do awesome cover versions of modern songs. Everything from Coldplay to Ozzy to Tupac. we are going to have our DJ play their music before the ceremony while everyone is arriving and finding their seats. It gives fun, modern songs a more wedding appropriate spin. You might be able to find their arrangements somewhere to give to your musicians.

In our wedding, the moms are walking in to Handel's "Largo." The wedding party is coming in to "Ode to Joy," while I'm walking down the aisle to "Trumpet Voluntary." Our recessional is Handel's "Hornpipe." We're having the church organist do our music, and he also made several great recommendations. I'd recommend going on YouTube and searching for pieces you like.

If we hadn't been married in a church however, I always thought the first portion of the first track on The Patriot soundtrack was exquisite.  Smile

    Good luck!
