NWR: Movies

In an effort to break out of my little box, I wanted to know if any of you have seen "True Grit"or "Black Swan" and what you thought.  These are two contenders for tonight's date night.  I can only see about one heavy, dramatic movie a year so I guess I'm getting this out of the way early.

My FMIL and FSIL just went and saw Black Swan. Their take on it was, it wasn't "bad" but it wasn't "good". It was confusing, and REALLY weird. They won't watch it again, but they are glad they got to see it. And they can never go see another ballet. lol. If that helps any....

I haven't seen either yet, but I want to see Black Swan when it comes out on video. I'm not much a fan of dramatic movies either so I'm just like you.

I don't know anything about True Grit except that its a remake.

I don't know anything about either...but DH and I look up the user ratings on Yahoo Movies and they have never once steered us wrong.  We never see anything that is less than a "B" at the theatre.

Seriously... ratings are right on the money.

I haven't seen either, but my Dad saw Black Swan (disappointed) and my best friends saw True Grit (loved it). My fav Oscar contender so far is The King's Speech, which is more lighthearted.

I definitely want to see "The King's Speech" but it's not showing out here where we work.  That'll be a weekend thing.

I saw the original "True Grit" with John Wayne.  He won an Oscar for it (not his best movie, IMHO) and I remember being a little bored with it.  I think it would be kind of neat though for Jeff Bridges to win an Oscar for the same role.

    Tiffany,
Thanks for the tips on the Yahoo! movie goers.  I have Fandango on my phone and forget to look at their user ratings.

I have gotten mixed reviews on "True Grit".  We were suppose to go see it Saturday but Dh got sick so we weren't able to go.  It looks like it will have some slow parts and I have had a lot of girls tell me it's kinda boring but the guys have all been a "love it".

I heard (and now want to see) "Black Swan" is dark and twisted but very good. I heard that you will either love it or hate it though.  If you aren't into dark, dramatic this one might be a skip.  We are going to see it soon hopefully!

I have heard mixed reviews on Black Swan. My sister loved it, but her boyfriend didn't really like it. Some friends of ours who like weird movies said it was really intense.

My parents saw True Grit and loved it.

I saw Black Swan on Thursday.
It definitely gave me chills as I watched it. It's more of a psychological thriller than anything, although there was a little gore in it. I recommend it.

As far as True Grit, my dad saw it over the holiday and said it was better than the original.

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

I actually really liked Black Swan! I went into it expecting it to be weird and dark though. Natalie Portman did a really good job with her character. I can see how that movie wouldn't be for everyone's cup of tea though.

I saw Black Swan. I went with one of my friends and we were both extremely uncomfortable with all the girl on girl action. Gore I can handle, but I had not prepared myself for that! Though the story is brilliantly written I probably wont see it again.

I saw True Grit and LOVED it.  I have never seen the original, so I cant compare, but I thought this one was great.  It was funny and interesting and kept me awake the whole time!  I am notorious for falling asleep at the movies Embarassed but I would see this again.

ETA:  And I wouldnt really classify it as a heavy/dramatic movie.. more action in my opinion...

We saw "True Grit" and it was good.  Thanks, girls, for all the opinions.  We may see "Black Swan" yet--Bill likes Natalie Portman.
