Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

ipod @ my wedding

Is there a feature in itunes (or another program) where I can control what type of song plays next, without having to skip to the next song right in the middle of the song that's playing?? Of course I can estimate an hour of low-key music for the cocktail hour, but what do I do if there is a dance song playing during dinner, or if there are too many mellow songs playing when we need to hear something more upbeat? I'm worried that whoever is in charge of the ipod will be distracted and/or cut a song right in the middle. Hope this makes sense!! Thanks in advance!!

    Unfortunately I haven't come across a feature this specific without having to make the playlist song by song. However, you COULD make several different playlists, for example:

    Cocktail Hour
    Dinner Hour
    Speeches (either all off or very soft, quiet music)
    Dance Mix

    Then you could just put a playlist on random but be happy with the songs it picks next.

    Also, have you might try the Genius feature--- you can select one song and it will try and pick other songs that are similar... I don't have a ton of luck with this feature, but my tastes are pretty eclectic. But, if you're looking for Dance music, you could pick a Lady GaGa song (for example) and let it choose other upbeat songs for you.

    What I am doing is making separate playlists for each section
    Cocktail hour - will have longer than an hours worth of music, incase it goes over, and it will be on repeat just incase
    Dinner hour
    First dance & parents dance

    and then the dancing music.

    This way the music plays in the order I want it to
    Im also adding a song request to the RSVPs so that anyone who wants to can add a song request in advance ( much like people do with DJs )

    hope that helps :)

    if you want a wedding disaster then use your own IPOD - having been in the catering industry for many years I have witnessed many IPOD weddings - they ALL suck big time;
    Brides think they are DJs - they are not and have no clue about music.
    Brothers of the bride think they are good MC's - they suck.
    No guest tells a bride at the end of her wedding anything other than - yes it was great as they do not want to upset her - fact is they lie as I spoke to many guests at IPOD weddings and they think the couple is cheap, and the IPOD is terrible - like serving the guests pizza  to eat or cooking a hot pot yourself;

    IPOD weddings are lame boring and terrible;

    Sooo... what you're saying is that if a bride can't afford to get a DJ, then there should be no music as opposed to iPod music?
    Your comment is pretty terrible.  Dj's are expensive, and the last iPod wedding I went to blew the two DJ weddings before then out of the water. Completely. The DJ's sucked at those weddings. The iPod was awesome.

    Thanks, Trishes. I myself have worked in event planning and can honestly say that I have  never met a DJ that wasn't totally corny. Nothing would give me more anxiety than to have some guy announce "HERE COME THE NEW BRIDE AND GROOM!!" and have to hear the chicken dance and electric slide. I've seen too many brides pay good money for highly reccomended DJs and give specific instructions, along with a "Do NOT play" list, and the jerks play al the cheesy songs anyway. Sounds like BertCheryl is one of these guys!!

    I'm trying my best to make my wedding unique and to keep it as far from cookie-cutter as possible. I know the kind of music I like to hear, and I know what type of music our guests like to hear (if I didn't, I probably wouldn't know them well enough to invite them). It's not as much about the money as it is about the ambiance and the type off mood I woud like to set. My fiancee and his brother are musicians, so we will have all of the right equipment and know how to use it properly. I'm sure we will pull it off successfully!

    Good luck - we're trying the same thing. With 26 days left, I still have NO idea what I'm putting on it, just that I'll be making playlists specific to each section (cocktail, dinner, dancing).  I think I'll be asking my friends what they put on theirs - I can't remember, but it was good!

    I would love to hear from brides who had a successful iPod wedding so they can share their tips. My fiance and I decided this weekend to forgo the DJ because, honestly, we don't have $1,500 to spend on some guy who gets paid to press play.  My fiance is also a musician so like you, April, we have access to good equiptment.

    I was also going to make seperate playlists. My wedding is a cocktail reception so I think it will be easier to seperate music. It seems to be a good way to go. I was also going to ask for requests via RSVP so I have an idea of what people would like to hear.

    Are you ladies planning on paying someone, like a friend of a friend, to man the music table or putting someone in charge? I too am worried about a guest getting distracted. My friend went to an iPod wedding and said that when guests didn't like the music they'd run over to the table to click next. I'd like to think that my guests wouldn't do that, but I could see how some inebriated guest might take it upon himself to skip my favorite song that he's not a fan of.

    I'm not planning on paying anyone or anything of the sort -  the last wedding I went to was an iPod wedding, and no one bothered with the equipment or the ipod.  You could always put it somewhere guests won't be able to see it/mess with it?
    I'm doing my music playlists by timeline - so basically, enough songs to span the cocktail and dinner hour (I imagine the songs for that would be the same types), and then the rest to span the rest of the dancing/hanging out time.  We're not really having a set "first dance" though or anything, so we're just going to play it by ear.
