DJ vs Live Band- Help!!

I've hit a snag in planning, can't decide whether to go with a DJ or a Live Band....
A family member has offered his band at a discount They are a great band, I've seen them play numerous times and I know my family, and extended family will love it.

The problem is they will not play during the cocktail hour, or during dinner, so I will still need to find music for that time. Also the music is fairly genre-specific, latin, and oldies type stuff. Fiance and I are much more into the alternative scene and we love eighties/ early nineties type stuff. So it's not really our personal taste, but it will definately entertain our crowd (my family especially) Also, there are 10 members in the band, which I would have to feed.

I've been to 3 weddings since February, each with a DJ and each reception seemed to fizzle out fairly early. 

I want my guests to have a great time, but I'm torn....What are you girls going with?

    Live bands are just so much more fun!!!

    You can always have an iPod going during the cocktail hour just for background music, and then the live band starts later.  We are having a live band and everyone is so excited about it!

    DJ!

    Never crossed my mind otherwise. I was never really a big fan of bands though. Something about having the actual artist's song played was more appealing to me!

    I love live music which is why I am having live for my ceremony, but I picked a DJ for the reception.  They are able to take requests and play any genre.  A band would be awesome if you had a agroup of people that liked only their genre.  I love to dance and I like the oldies and new music and I knew there wasn't a band in my area that could do it all!

    Thanks girls for your input, much appreciated :) I'm going to start checking out DJ's in my area and start polling my family (a little sneaky, but just to get a sense, I don't know how much morrissey grandma could take!)
