It all depends on the region you're in and what type of coverage.  Here in Indiana it's anywhere from $800 for basic coverage (only ceremony and reception to the last main event) to $6000 for ultimate coverage (rehearsal coverage, unlimited time on the day of the wedding and the photographer walks out the doors after the bride and groom at the reception, bridal portraits, engagement session, etc.).I'd say at least 8 hours for basic ceremony and reception coverage is a must.  But, if you can get unlimited time on the day of then it'd be less of a headache for you.  Your photographer wouldn't be 'clock-watching' then and you wouldn't have to worry about whether or not they'll be there or not for every important event throughout the day.

a good price is what you can afford and are willing you pay.  where are you located?  as PP stated, varies a ton on photog, experience, what you get, etc.  pics on dvd or albums?  5 hours covereage or all day?  1 photog. or 2 plus an assistant?  style?  here in nyc-area you see $1500 to $10k+.  your "standard" price-range is more around $2500-3000, albums not included.
