Photo packages - album or no album - need advise

We are debating on whether or not we should chose a phototgrapher that has a package which includes print credits, albums, brag books and parent albums, or if we should just get the photos and personal reproduction rights and use an internet service (snapfish, shutterfly, ect) to create and print or own albums.... any thoughts?

It was very important to me to have an album for us so to compromise, we ordered a package that included an album, then I just made parents' albums myself.

Although I did use Blurb for the one for my mom, I made a professional quality album for DH's parents using somersetalbums.com which was almost identical to the one we got from our photographer.  It was still expensive ($400) but I had the fun of making it myself.  I have pictures and a review in my bio.  So there are options besides Blurb, etc. out there.

Talk to the photographers you're interested in, mine always gives the rights to the photos, and since I wasn't sure if I wanted an album when we signed, he said we could get an album for a year following the wedding at the price he values it at when he puts together a package (i.e. album is usually $500 after the fact, but is only $300 when he puts a package together).  The rights were more important to me, because I wanted all the "good" photos from the wedding, not just the 90 I selected to be in an album.

The photographer may not always be around if something happens to my album, but I feel like the photos have a better chance of surviving if I have them on a cd and backed up on my computer.

personally, I didn't go with an album or anything.  Our phohotgrapher gives a little book in all her packages which is fine, but we weren't about to pay for an overpriced album.  As a photographer myself I know making albums can be time consuming, so you are not only paying for the album itself, but also your photographer's time.

If you don't think you will ever have time or aren't creative enought o make an album, you may want to suck it up and order one from your photographer.  If you think you can do it yourself, I say do it!
