Cake Tastings

I know, I know... I've been on here long enough that I should have a list of recommended cake bakers, and I do... in a way.

Long story short, Chris & I are taking off the majority of next week, and I thought it would be a great time to do tastings (although that idea came a little late).  I am trying to book a couple more tastings - here is what I have so far.

Elena's cakes - Booked appointment

Cake Guys -  Completed online form, but I'm doubtful since they only have them on Sundays and I'm sure they are already booked.

Texas Star Bakery - No appointments available next week, but we could pick up the flavors, drop off pictures and do a phone consult at a later time.

Panini Bakery - Almost made an appointment, until she informed me that they do not deliver to the Colony (where our venue is).

Are there any others that I should check out?  Thanks in advance!!

You should try Candy Haven in Denton.  Their cakes are so good!

I second Candy Haven. My cake was beautiful and tasted great.

I went to bridal show with my friend and Delicious Cakes had the prettiest and tastiest cakes there. They might be worth checking out.

Thanks Sarah!  Just made an appointment there!

I hope you like them!  I ate too much cake while I was there!  All of their flavors were just so good!  They even sent home pieces of our favorites so we could have more later! :-)  Let me know how it goes!

Both my FSIL and my MOH had their wedding cakes from Candy Haven, and they were very tasty. Also, if you're there before 2pm, pick up some pastries from Kolache Haven next door for later. So yummy!

I booked with CuCa Lu and their cakes are great (very informal) but she (Jennifer Garcia) gives you three small cakes to take home with you to taste.  Anyways,  everyone loved them and even after a week of saving for my sister, it was delicious.

We went with Colleens Cakes and she was my favorite vendor and I cannot recommend her enough.

We also went with Colleen's Cakes.  She's in Keller, but it's worth the trip - it was our best tasting and we went ahead and ordered with her.  Due to a conflict, we have to pick up our cake, but it's worth it!  I even "ordered" her sample tray again later because she had so many great flavors I couldn't decide!

I have no realm of understanding when it comes to many things in the wedding world. How much does the average wedding cake cost? Or, how much do budget wedding cakes generally cost? I have no way of mentally comparing prices because I don't know what a reasonable price is. :)

The reason I ask is because I thought I had an understanding of the average price of a photographer and I was scared of how much I would end up paying. Then the DFW ladies came to the rescue when I found a post that gave lots of great photographers that were closer to my budget.
Disclaimer: Please excuse the above comment. I'm probably freaking out because there is less than one month to go. Thank you.

Its a really good thing that I am no where near Denton right now.  Kolache Haven & Candy haven, yummmy!

Sorry, that was no assistance to you Lauren.  I vote for Candy Haven and Cake Guys if you can get in with them!  Love them both!

Amber- I had tastings with vendors and the price ranged from $1.75/slice to over $4/slice.  It also depends if cake is a priority to you to determine how much you want to spend.  I have no idea what the typical percentage of your budget is the cake.

Oh and don't just pass on the vendors that are more pricey because mine (Colleens Cake) had free delivery and set up.  She was $3-something per slice and came out cheaper than one vendor we looked at who was $2-something per slice.  The extra's (which I personally thought were ridiculous) added up quickly.

Yummy post!  I booked with Elena's so I want to know what you think when you're done.  She is fabulous!  A little more than originally wanted, but we saved so much on the dress, we made it work.

You are VERY smart to space out your appointments.  We were on a limited schedule, so I did 4 in one day.  I never thought I'd say this, but I was so sick of cake I thought I'd never want a slice again.

GL!  I've heard great things about Texas Star Bakery as well.

The three I am going to do tastings at are:
    Texas Star Bakery
    Colleen's Cakes
    Opulent Cakes

My parents and sister had Opulent Cakes "White Chocolate Raspberry" and all said it was the best cake they had ever tasted (even my sister, who hates raspberry). Cake tastings are the part of wedding planning that I am most looking forward to!

Loved Elena's Cakes when we did our tasting.  We ended up going with Panini, that's too bad they don't deliver to The Colony.  My photographer raved about CucaLu (they weren't around when I was cake shopping).

We booked at Opulent Cakes.  Our tasting was wonderful!!!!  We also booked a white chocolate fountain instead of a grooms cake.  Even my FI loved the cake and he is NOT a cake eater.

I hope that your experience with Romano's turns out better than ours.  My cake didn't look like it was supposed to (and it was the most simple cake I could have picked) and the groom's cake was the sloppiest thing I have ever seen and was supposed to feed 50 people.  It only fed maybe 20.

Even the owner of Romano's agreed that th G's cake was sub-par but fought me on the wedding cake a bit.  We got about 45% of what we paid refunded to us.  IT WAS THAT BAD. However, they did taste good. Needless to say, I was not happy and actually plan on not having any pictures on our cakes in our album.

PS... I am a pastry chef and yes I do have high standards but when I pay as much as I did for those cakes, it should have been MUCH BETTER!

AND I ABSOLUTELY DETEST CANDY HAVEN. I encounter many people who love them. Many of my very good friends actually.  But I think every single cake they make tastes like almond extract and they do not make their buttercream (they buy it in buckets) - just not my idea of a good cake.  Again though, I tend to have high standards in this department.

If I am not too late...I love Delicious Cakes. I went to the one in Addison, and those guys were friendly and reallly help me out when deciding the style and look of my cake...I got a great deal. I purchased my cake and got the groom's cake for free!!  So give them a call if you can. I don't know if that special is going on, but it is worth a try
