XP NWR: Dallas dining reccs?

XP from the nest board - seems to be a quiet board... maybe you guys can help??

Hi there DFW! I live in CT and am heading to Dallas later this month for a trade show. We will be staying in the downtown area (I believe) and are looking for some dinner ideas. We are looking for basically any types of cuisine, $25 entree price and under, non-national-chain, stuff that will appeal to foodies. Any suggestions?? We will not have a car so reasonable cab distance from the Dallas Conv Ctr or downtown area in general... thanks in advance!

Also, any areas in downtown that I should avoid running alone (during daylight etc) or places that are especially nice? Finally, any nice shopping areas or something? We will have some down time the first full day we are there... thanks!

Dallas has a light rail line that runs through Downtown towards the north that will take you to some great places.  It means that you don't have to stay in Downtown which is generally deserted after work hours.  If you take it (I think it's the red line) to the Mockingbird station, you can walk to Campisi's which is one of Dallas' most historic Italian restaurants.  There's another stop that has trolley service to and from NorthPark, the nicest mall in the area.  There's a Luna de Noche (Mexican), a Kona Grill (seafood and other stuff), and several other sit down restaurants.  They have a very nice movie theater too if you get really bored.  You can also take the green line to Deep Ellum but my favorite restaurant there recently closed down and I don't know what else is there.  If you go to Dart.org, you can find out where all you can go.  You can even take the TRE to Fort Worth and walk a few minutes to get into their Sundance Square.  You'll also be a cab ride away from Uptown in Dallas.  Have fun!

For Tex-Mex in that price range (if you feel up to trying it!), I love the old downtown El Fenix on McKinney.  For pizza I love Campisi's (there is one downtown I think) or if you wanted to go to the West Village/Uptown area, Grimaldi's in West Village is the best!  For sushi, Deep Sushi in Deep Ellum (Elm Street), for Sunday brunch Monica's, also in Deep Ellum (Main St.) is great ($1 mimosas!).  Twisted Root Burger in Deep Ellum (Commerce St.) is supposed to be good.  Cindi's Deli on South Houston is great.  For BBQ, there is a Sonny Bryan's. One of my favorite casual restaurants in Dallas is PF Chang (China Bistro) (at Northpark Mall--a little ways out of downtown.  There is a Cheesecake Factory across from there also).  And Dallas is full of great upscale restaurants.

For nice shopping, you will need to head out to either Northpark Mall or the Galleria Mall or there are smaller boutique shopping areas in West Village or Mockingbird Station.

El Fenix is a must, Twisted Root is awesome, and NorthPark is mind-blowing. I hope you have fun in our fair city!
