NWR: Decorating

This question is so random and NWR at all, so sorry about that.  We recently moved to a two story townhome.  The living room opens up to the staircase - so it opens up all the way to the top ceiling (if that makes sense).  There are two huge walls in the living room.  One is an outside wall and has two ginormous windows that are horizontal and parallel to each other.  The other wall has nothing on it.  It is so tall and I have no idea how to fill the void.  My only ideas are to hang three canvas pictures.  You know those pictures that scan across three different frames?  Even then, I'm not sure if I can fill the huge space enough that the living room doesn't feel empty.  I hope I have explained it welll enough.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to decorate this wall?  Also, our townhome is fairly new - built in 2006 and is updated with modern touches.  Our other decor is mainly black and white photos of buildings we took when we vacationed in Boston.  Any ideas?

    That sounds like my parents house, they have a large tapestry hung on an iron rod.

    My parents have a wall exactly like this...literally two stories tall. She painted it, that helped A LOT. Are you allowed to paint? I'm not sure if you're renting or not. :)

    Can you paint? I would probably make that wall an accent wall. I think having a color would do a lot to fill up that wall.

    Yeah painting i think would help fill up the space that the pictures you hang don't :)

    I was going to say paint as well.  Maybe paint just that wall, as an accent wall, if it fits with the focus of the wall.  That would help anything you hang feel like it has more presence than the same picture being hung on a blank beige wall.  I think the multiple canvas idea sound like a good plan. 

    I'm also a big fan of collages... I love to display photos of family/friends/vacations, but I don't have a lot of places other than big blank walls to hang them, so I have several hung together - they're mostly 5x7, and in similar frames.  I have two different ones... One spans my long hallway, on both sides, and is all black frames (probably 25), and then the other is antique-gold frames and is in my bedroom (6-7).  Maybe something like that would help your wall feel more full?

    going off what Angela said, my mother did this as well. She had about a 4X6 square that she filled with frames. They were all pictures of our family traveling, and then she purchased letters from hobby lobby and spelled the word "travel" above it. It's beautiful. AND it takes up alot of space! :)

    Melissa - I never would have thought about hanging a tapestry!  Thanks.
    Ashlee/Anna - I'm renting, so I can't paint it.  It is painted a different color than the other walls already, but still a very neutral, rent friendly color.
    Angie/Ashlee - Ooh - collages!  I never would have thought of that either.  Thanks.

    So, you would think it's okay if I just decorate the bottom half of the wall, right?  Just the actual living room part? Not that I would try to hang pictures 10 ft up.

    I'm an Interior Designer!

    Usually painting a tall wall like that can be costly (if you hire someone) or overwhelming for most people to accomplish yourself. I designed a space that was similar and I actually used a two toned effect by painting a horizontal stripe in a slightly darker shade at a normal ceiling height. This helps divide the wall and helps your photos look more proportionate. Its hard to describe unless I drew something for you, but graphic lines and blocks can help divide the space.

    I think if you get the right size frames it'd look great :) I think my mothers starts about 4-5 feet off the ground. It may go up ten feet from the ground. But it's a BIG wall.

    ETA: on Lauren's point, i think my mom nailed a strip of molding, very small (about an inch to 2 inches wide, about 4 feet up the wall all the way across, it's removable, and is cheap. That could help divide the wall as well since you can't paint it :)

    Oh and Lacey, if you're like me and don't have alot of pictures, try some decor :)

    Hobby Lobby is GREAT for it. Especially if you catch their awesome sales. I got these wood decor for $6 each, and the clock was $14! Although my wall is much smaller, they took up alot of space and made it look really nice :)

    Thank you :) My mother came over to help us paint and decorate it. Took about 4 hours to paint, dry and hang everything. Not too shabby :)

    I have a wall just like that.  I made it into a cross wall.  I used to collect all kinds, but I changed it to all that are wrought iron.  If you look on FB, I probably have a pic or two that shows some of it.  They go pretty much all the way to the very top now.
