Did you register for a large mixer?

My mom is pressuring me to register for one but I do not think I will use it that much which is a waste of a lot of money.  She thinks it is essential to the kitchen.  Do you have one and do you use it?

Re: Did you register for a large mixer?

  • I didn't register for one, but that's because I got one for Christmas last year.  Let me put it this way.  I have only used it several times, but it's one of those things that you'll be very happy to have when you do need it.  I'm not sure how old you are or if you have a family, but chances are you'll start cooking more as you get older, hosting friends and family, and/or have kids.  It's much better than using a hand mixer for most things.  Honestly, my mom has had her Kitchen Aid mixer for over 30 years, and has used it for everything.  But, if you don't want one, you don't have to register for it.  It's your choice!
  • I got to use my KitchenAid for the first time this past weekend and LOVE it! That and the FoodSaver are my favorite gifts! But I love cooking/baking and cook everyday so that may be why. I'm so glad I registered for it.

  • I did not register for one since I already have the kitchenaid.  It is the best appliance in the kitchen. IMO I don't get to use it too often but when I need it it makes life so much easier.
  • You could look for one that has one base several different uses.  Mine has different attachments to be a mixer, blender or food processor.  But if you don't need one, then don't register for one (maybe tell your mom you'll put some of your wedding money aside for one and if you feel like you made a mistake not getting one now, you'll buy it when your ready).
  • I would say register for one.  I love to cook and bake, but knew I wouldn't be using it all too often, and was even questioning if we should have it on there (since it's so expensive!) but then I made cookies two nights ago and realized how much of a help it would be to have it.  Think of everything it's going to be useful for....making cookies, mashed potatoes, cakes, well, anything that can be mixed.  And when are you going to spend that much on a kitchen appliance?  Also, like pp's said, you'll be very grateful for it when you have a family or a gathering.  It may seem like its not a  big deal to mix things yourself, but when you have  little time and more than one thing to do, it'll be a great help
  • My mom just got me one for a housewarming present and I am SO excited!!  I also got an attachment for a wedding present - you might like the attachments.  The PP mentioned them, they have ones for making pasta, grinding meat, chopping/slicing veggies or fruit, etc.  The one we got is a juicer - we're going to use it to get lime juice and make margaritas.  :-)  I don't think you'll find that you use it all the time, but when you use it I think you'll be happy it's there.  Of course, it's a personal choice what you register for, so think about what you really want!
  • There's also an ice cream maker attachment-can't wait to get that one!

  • We got ours as an engagement gift, and I absolutely love it!  If you do any cooking or baking at all, it comes in so  handy and is a lot better than a hand mixer.  I use it to make meat loaf, mashed potatoes, bake bread, make pastries, cookies, etc.  In my opinion, it's the best kitchen appliance there is, and the attachments, as pp have said, are wonderful.  I strongly suggest registering for one.  Even if you don't think you'll use it much now, you might regret not having it later.
  • I got one last xmas and I rarely use it. When I do bake (that being the rarely part) I do use it. It does look pretty nice on my counter though, haha.
  • It's the thing I want most on my registry!  I've been dying to bake, and it's pretty much impossible to mix any kind of thick doughs with just our stick blender.  I would go out and buy it myself, but it's too expensive.  They're really quite handy.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • i agree with you!  the stand mixers are heavy and take up a ton of room.i've been married almost 30 years and never owned a kitchenaid mixer (or the like) and never missed it.  i make thanksgiving and christmas for around 10 - 15 every year and haven't had a problem yet...have gone through a couple hand mixers in my 30 years.if you do cook regularly for big crowds and bake lots then maybe consider registering for one.
  • We registered for one even though I wasn't sure anyone would buy it. We did get it from close family friends and I love it! So nice for baking or making large batches.  It's something that I wouldn't have wanted to throw down $300 for myself so I thought it was a wonderful gift.
  • I had my kitchenaid for a few years before meeting dh. It is so so useful you will not use it every day but when you do it is so so worth it and they last a lifetime or longer
  • ditto Swim. I didn't register for one, because my mom purchased me one when I moved into my first apartment after college. We would have registered for one if I didn't already have one. Literally everyone I know has one or registered for one. Don't worry about the cost- guests will split the cost, if they choose, with others. I do really think you will probably use it as you get older. My mother has had hers since the early 70s. I don't think of her as a dedicated cook or baker, but I can't tell you how many times we used that mixer growing up.
  • I love mine ! The thing I make the most in mine, don't laugh, is  FUDGE !  I love to make homemade fudge, but the stirring will kill me, however, I got the bright idea at Christmas time to put all the ingredients in there, and I was slamming out pounds at a time ! You will use it, trust me !
