Register at Target? Yes or No?

I have heard many differing things about registering at Target. I hear that you cannot return anything without a gift receipt-- which could be a problem for us.
I have been on the Target site all day. It looks like they are re-doing their return policy for gifts, but I don't quite understand it.

Is anyone on the same boat? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Re: Register at Target? Yes or No?

  • I have heard about the return-policy redo, my cousin had some issues with the returns that didn't have gift receipts, but her wedding was in May of 2009 so I'm not sure how relevant that is.

And if I were you, I'd start a new account with a new screen name - it's generally not a good idea to put your full name out on the Knot boards like that. I keep reading third-hand accounts of people being messed with online, so just a heads up.

I left my thoughts on experience with a Target registry a few threads down, as did others.  I think it's called Help Narrowing Down Registry Stores?

    Good luck!

  • I've heard bad things about Target. I don't think we will register there, just from the stories that we've heard.

  • I'm a Target shopper, but I hate their registries.  I have had multiple bad experiences shopping from wedding and baby registries there, so I didn't even consider Target for one of my own registries.  The in-store printout is poorly organized and confusing, and even though I handed the sheet to the cashier and said I was shopping from the registry, 4 times out of 5 my item didn't show up as being purchased.  I have also had issues with their registry printer not working about half the time, and being told that they couldn't print me a gift receipt on three occasions.   The one time I shopped online, it was easier to find items, but shipping was astronomical and the item didn't show up as being purchased then, either.

I've heard horror stories about their return policy, but I've actually had good experiences returning things there (without a receipt) in the past.  It wasn't registry items, and I was only able to get store credit without the receipt, but that's pretty normal and it was easy and painless.  It may be more difficult if you have more/larger items to return, I don't know.

  • I would say no. I love Target but not for registries based on friend/family experiences. My cousin and his FI were going to register there but they have a lot of items they consider "seasonal" which means you are not allowed to register for them. The items they were considering seasonal weren't even seasonal by most definitions.
  • I say no as well! I had a few friends that had horrible experiences with Target. I say register at Bed Bath and Beyond, I received such great customer service from them.

  • No!

I registered there and if I had to do it again, and I would register somewhere else.  I was able to return things, but not as easily as other places.  A few items that got shipped to me arrive broken.  Also, there were so many items that were either just available in store or just available online.  That made it hard for people to show up to the shore and make a purchase.

With so many other good places out there to register, this is one I would avoid.

  • I'm a huge Target shopper.. pretty much exclusively for groceries and household items so it was a no-brainer to us to register there. We also registered at Crate & Barrel and BBB and since so many of our items at Target could have been found at BBB we wish we had just stuck with C&B and BBB.

However, we had zero issues returning items to Target with or without the receipt. I even brought back items that were not on my registry at all without a receipt and they took them back and gave me store credit no questions asked. I love Target and have never had any issues with them.
  • I registered at Target and have not had a problem, but you will need to keep updated on your registry and watch for items to become unavailable and such.  Target's prices were often better than BBB

  • We registered at Target and had no problems.

As for their return policy, your registry counts as a gift receipt.  So if you have returns  you just print out the front page of your registry, and bring that to Customer Service and they give you store credit.

The only "problem" we had was that we received 2 of our camping grills because one didn't come off the registry.  Come to find out it's because Coleman had changed their packaging, which also changed the SKU, so it didn't show up when they scanned it.  But I've had those same problems at Babies R Us before, and BBB, so it's not exclusive to Target.

  • We registered at BBB and Target for our wedding, and while I enjoy shopping at Target, I did not enjoy having the registry there.
It was an unorganized mess at Target. The wrong color curtains were on the in-store print out, the correct color was found on the list online. My aunt got the wrong color (which we ended up liking alot and kept, I'm sure we could have returned them - but when she comes over she is delighted to see them hanging up in the bedroom) So I am glad we kept them.
Also another aunt got us a handful of things and only two of the group of items came up as purchased.

  • I think it depends on the store you'll actually be dealing with.

We registered at Target, and have gotten most of our gifts from there.  When returning things, we didn't need a receipt - they have a system that keeps track of whether or not a registry item has been returned, so if it was purchased through the registry they will give you a gift card in exchange with no problems.

The downside, from my perspective, is the separation between their local stores and online items.  Shipping is randomly expensive on some things only, and you can't order something online and pick it up in the store.  We had a shower in one place, returned the larger items we'd received, and re-purchased them locally, but had to do some online and got hit for some shipping charges.

Overall, though, it's been a very positive experience and I in no way regret registering at Target.  They have a wide selection at varying price points to choose from.

  • I saw this post and I figured I'd put in my own two cents. I'm employed at Target, so I deal with gift registries quite frequently. You can return things without a gift receipt, but you will not get the full value of the item, because some items can be found in other retail centers. (Not to mention, one could try and return it for more money value than from the place that is selling it for a cheaper value. When printing the gift registry, us cashiers scan them and there's an automatic gift receipt printed out at the bottom of the receipt verifying your purchase. Then once that item has been bought, it is taken off the gift registry. To be honest, it can be the store you're registering at. Usually, we make sure our guests want a gift receipt with anything they need one for. Also, you might want to keep in mind, when registering, something go out of season/stock, usually a 3-6 month window considering Target is always trying to bring in new things to keep with the trends of society and staying "green". Their designers are always coming out with things too. You'd have to think about what kind of Target you're shopping at because many are going under renovations and some things are not quite in the system yet. We're in the process of going from one of the newest Targets around to becoming a Super Target. As far as I know, there's three kinds of Target (that I like to refer to), the old target (which has those ugly yellow lights surrounding the softlines), the new Target that offers Starbucks and Pizza Hut (which the old Target doesn't), and the Super Target which offers produce. Each Target's going to vary in what they supply based on the geography of the area, the racial ethnicity, economical geography, and the other demographics of the population. We are quite reliable though, haven't ran into any problems but that's just me (speaking as a shopper- not an employee of Target) Let me know if you have any other questions :)
  • We have a small Target registry and so far we've had no problems.  You can return things without a problem if they're on the registry now.
