Engagement party gifts....need help with thank you cards

My parents just hosted the most wonderful engagement party for my fiance and I this past weekend. We received some cash/checks, gifts from our registry and also some other gifts (picture frames, wine, champagne etc.)

I know that we cannot use any of the items until after the wedding. We are planning on depositing the $ into a bank account that we won't be touching until after the wedding too.

My question is about the thank you cards for the monetary gifts that we received. Do we tell people that we will be saving it until after their wedding? If we planned on using some of it to purchase items from our registry (we got a few gift cards to places we are registered), can we say that in a thank you? I'm very unsure of how to word the thank you's since we won't be using the $/gifts until about a year from now.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

  • For monetary gifts that we received before the wedding, I wrote something like, "Thank you for the generous gift.  After the wedding, we are moving to (new state), and we look forward to putting your gift towards decorating our new place."  I don't think you need to spell out that you're saving the money until after the wedding, but if you want to make it clear, you could say something like what I did (maybe: "We are looking forward to treating ourself to a nice dinner at our favorite restaurant to celebrate our new married life" or whatever).

With the gift cards, you should check to make sure they don't expire or lose value, since you said you have about a year to go.

I did write thank yous for cash that noted speciffically what we would use it for, purchasing a specific registry item (usually flatware or placesettings) or decor for our new house.  I guess I'd rather write SOMETHING that it will be used for instead of "we'll be saving it in our bank account", which is commendable and honest, but not as fun as knowing what it went towards
