Can I use home repair as a write off on my taxes?

I tried doing some research online but couldn't find anything. Can I use home repair as a write off on my taxes, is it just home repair or cosmetic as well like paint.

thank you!!

I think the IRS splits them into two areas, home repairs and home improvements.  Home repairs are things like repairing or replacing windows, carpet, etc.  Home improvements are things such as adding an additional room or building a pool and I want to say that both cannot be added as a write off on taxes but I someone please correct me if I am wrong.  I believe that you add the cost of home improvements to the tax basis of your property.

I have updated my townhome off and on for the past 8 years and I wish I could get some kind of credit/deduction but instead it just added to the value of my place, which I am not complaining.

The only thing I know for sure is that you can deduct anything that made your home more "green" or energy efficient.  Other than that, I'd say check with a professional.

I use Turbo Tax and it walks you through all of this and it explains what you can and can't do- I haven't started and don't remember off the top of my head, but if you don't want to go to an accountant, i would recommend turbo tax.

Yes, you can get a tax credit for home improvements or appliances that make your home more energy efficient.  I think up to $500 - $1500 credit.

Things like solar or high efficiency appliances (things with the "energy star" rating), thermal windows and doors, insulation, etc...
