Moms and Maids

Expecting Weight Loss

One of my bridesmaids (a beautiful, voluptuous woman!) has mentioned several times that she is planning on losing weight before our wedding in May. I am doing everything I can to encourage her, (don't get me wrong, she could gain 20 lbs and still be beautiful in my eyes!) but her being a busy student - and considering her past efforts at losing the weight, I really doubt that there will be much of a change in the 5 months we have left - especially with the Christmas festivities.

She wants to purchase a smaller dress NOW, in hopes that she "might" fit it come wedding time. I don't think this is a smart desicion, and any alterations that would need to be done to the particular dress my maids have their eye on would be a massive change in order to accomodate her "girls." We all really like the dress - it's affordable, cute and definitely fits in with the wedding scheme.

I don't think it is wise to take this kind of risk, and truthfully, I am not willing to take a gamble with her expected weight loss. How do I suggest we wait - or select a different dress that can be more easily altered if her weight loss plans fall through? I don't want to be rude, but I don't want to put her, me and the other maids in a bad situation the week before the wedding.

Help!

[QUOTE]No, no, no, no, no, no, no. And NO. From someone who sews: it is MUCH easier to take in a too large gown than let out one that's too small. Depending on the style, letting it out may not be possible. Besides....think how good she'll feel when she puts on that dress and it's too big.

I agree with PPs.  The salon where DD got her dresses said they can usually take in a dress up to 2 sizes, however they likely won't be able to let it out even one size.  Tell her to order the correct size and enjoy taking it in when it arrives and is too big.

Okay totally random... I just LOL'd at this:

You posted about a BM intending to lose weight
Your screen name looks awfully close to "apple fritter"

How ironic.  Made me smile. HAHAHHAHA :-)

(I'm a heavier weight woman and I can tell you, even if I plan to lose weight, I still want the dress to fit, so it's better for it to be slightly lose than to struggle to get it zipped)

Ditto to Retread. Plus unless she has lost weight before it is very hard to tell how much she can lose in X amount of time. It is always safer to order the same size and then take in.

My best friend's sister said she was going to lose weight and order 1 size smaller, dress came in and it turned out that she actually gained weight and was running around trying to find someone to let it out (it also cost her over half what the dress originally cost) to let it out (they also had to add a panel of fabric, though lucky her it was not noticeable).

Anything without a set in band would be easily altered, princess cut dresses always alter well and they look good on a variety of different figures. I wouldnt change your dress if you've already found one you love that works with your theme. I agree with PP that I would tell her to order her size now, you never know where she is going to loose the weight (ex: it might be all in the "girls" but her hips are still there )

I agree with PPs...your BM's plan is not a good idea.  Even if she does lose the weight, no one knows for sure if she will lose it in the places necessary for a smaller dress to fit properly.  I started taking medication a few years back for a condition that affected my weight, and I lost 20 pounds relatively quickly, and while it made my legs and abdomen smaller, it didn't  help my chest...while I went down a band size, I went up a cup size.

Have her order her dress at the size she is now, as like PPs say, it's much easier to take in a dress than let one out.  And I'm sure it'll be a better feeling to have to take in a too-big dress than to find that a smaller-size dress is too small even with weight loss.
