do bm have to carry flowers?

Ok Im having a summer wedding and I recently saw a pic of bm with fans instead of flowers. I kinda like it. Is it tacky? what else can they carry. Ideas anyone?

How do your BMs feel about it? I don't think it would look cheesy if I were a guest at a wedding, but I personally would feel self-conscious and dress-uppy if I had to do it. I actually don't think they need to be carrying anything at all (I mean, the GM don't), but maybe that's just me.

No. they don't "have" to carry anything.  They can carry flowers, cute purses, fans, parasols, candles, lanterns, pomanders, books of poetry or, well, any topics, Bibles, single stems of larger flowers (callas for example), pretty boxes, or carry nothing at all.

"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

I talked to my girls and they want flowers because as my MOH put it "I'm gonna be up there in front of 150ppl and although I know they are looking at you not me I will fidget if I get nervous and don't have somthing to keep hands busy" Fair enough :)

Yeah, just make sure they have something to carry! Personally I adore the fans, although I ended up deciding not to go with them since I'm having a fall wedding instead of a spring and I didn't really feel like it went with the theme. But having something in their hands means that they don't have to stand their feeling awkward about not knowing what to do with their hands! It's weird to stand up in front of that many people anyway, and so knowing exactly where your hands are supposed to be (For me anyway) gives a measure of security.

I think that fans are a great idea. Flowers are too expensive anyway. ;)

[QUOTE]I think that's where the tradition began....give them something to hold instead of stand there. I attended a wedding where the bridal party carried large lace fans that were just beautiful. All the maids have them displayed in their home....one framed hers, another got a plate holder and has her fan on a shelf.

Hi Retread! Any idea where they got these? Do you have  picture of them? I would be really curious to see them.. I am using a lot of lace elements in my wedding, and they could be perfect for our wedding in the Florida sunshine.

After meeting with my florist, I decided to go a different route. $40 for each BM's flowers....um no way!!! I've decided to go with parasols and the girls love the idea.
