Bridesmaid Dress Material

Hey..Quick question.  I just recently decided on dresses for my bridesmaids.  They're going to be placing the order as soon as my last girl goes to get measured.  I'm kind of freaking out though, because I'm worried how the material will photograph.  They're matte satin, and puple (technically, they're african violet).  I don't want them to look shinny in pictures..does anyone know if they will?  What is the material that always looks shiny in pictures?  Taffeta?

Thanks!!

I guess it depends on the designer's fabric, but the taffeta I've seen has this metallic shine to it in person and in every photo I've seen of it.  If your BM dresses end up being too shiny, I *think* a good photographer can do things to cut down on the reflective factor in photos.  Did you take a picture of the dress with flash in the store, and did it come out too shiny on your camera?

As for material, satin is usually not a flattering fabric when photograph but maybe since its more of a matte look it will be less glaring. Also lighting can play a factor, natural lighting makes it less glare since the light is evenly distributed (science nerd), while flash is directional (though most pro photographers should be masters with flashes to minimize the effects).

You still have 11 months before your wedding. I really suggest looking a little more if you already having second thoughts. Dresses at max come in 4-6 months, you leave a month for alterations (if needed), I'm sure the salons are probably scaring you with "you need to buy now!" but really you don't, they are just trying to get your sale/money.

I didn't take a picture with flash..that would have been smart!  I just emailed my photographer, so I'll get his input.  I'm also going to call the dress shop on Monday and ask there.

    Great ideas!  Thanks =)

Ditto Autumn - you really should wait a few more months before picking dresses.

i've never really heard/seen that satin can come out shiny/unflattering in pictures. My BM dresses were purple satin also (the color was called "lapis"- they were from David's Bridal) and i thought they looked *amazing* in the pics. Our photographer was reallly, really good at lighting tho (apparently he teaches classes on it at photographer's conventions every year, lol) so maybe that had something to do with it.

I do agree with PP's that you don't need to stress to much about your BM dresses right now, tho. You have a lot of time, don't freak out about this right now;-)

Thanks for your advice everyone..my photographer said that theres a lot of other things that could effect the way the dresses come out in pictures, but if they're shiny - he'll fix them.  The dresses take 4 months to come in, and I have an out of state bridesmaid..and theres a few other reasons I did them so early.
