MOH Dress Delima

Good morning -

My MOH is due 2 weeks before my wedding and we are not sure when we should order her dress. Should she order it now (she is only 1 month) a few sizes bigger or wait till the end of her pregnancy and get an off the rack dress a   few sizes smaller?  Has any one been in a similar situation?  Also, should she order a maternity dress or a regular dress?  Any input is appreciated. Thanks - R

Wait a while before you order any of your BM dresses.  3 months before your wedding is ideal.  Look for empire waist dresses (at least for your pregnant BM) because they are more forgiving and every woman responds differently to pregnancy and the postpartum period.

If her baby comes in on-time (which nowadays they just kind of go in and get it out if it's even a day late) then two weeks is plenty of time to get alterations.  I would order a size or two bigger than her pre-baby bod and just plan on getting alterations.

And ditto jagore - empire waistlines can be very forgiving.

Don't order the dress until 4 months before. My wedding is June 18 and my bridal store needs the order in by the end of this week. Then yes, I would order it bigger because it is easy to take in. I am picky and want my MOH to have the same dress as everyone else. She is currently trying to get preg so she ordered it 1 size bigger just in case she gets preg between now and june.

Just went to the bridal shop yesterday.  One of my BMs is TTC, and the owner told us that for the designer we chose, who has a three-month turnaround, she can put in the order but won't need a final size until a month and a half after the order is submitted and the dresses are in line to be cut.

Don't order your dresses yet, and when you do, talk to the bridal shop and to whoever is doing the alterations.  They can advise you what to do.  And, second the Empire waist suggestion.  I think that's what my BM is going to do.

I would let her get an off-the-rack dress at the time of the wedding since it's really difficult to predict what size she'll need and bridal shops smell blood in the water when they see a pregnant BM because it means big bucks in alterations money ("Oh, just get it a couple sizes bigger, we can always alter it.".  <div>

Wait until the last possible moment to order the dress without rush shipping. Even if buying the dress off the rack is an option, I wouldn't chance them not having the correct size or color in. It is hard to say how big to order the dress because every woman is different and there are many factors. If you go with an empire with flowing fabric, it will be great because if she gets really big in front, or gains a bit of weight in the hips, that is the easiest way to "hide" it. There's a chance that the baby will sit more inside of her and she won't get very big at all. Her chest is another issue. I've known some women who gain many cup sizes during and after their pregnancy but I got about 0.5 cups. I can't say that I've know anyone who didn't gain cups during their pregnancy but really did when their milk came in...I'm sure it's happened though.

Someone at the bridal shop should be able to assist you, but you may want to double check their measurements and sizing by an online guide (if available). When I got measured for my BM dress (prenancy not an issue) the girl told me I was a size 22 or 24, depending on the designer. I didn't think that was possible so when it came time to order my dress I got remeasured, by someone else, and ended up ordering a 16W (which was a perfect fit).
