Wedding photographer switch...how to tell the old photographer you've changed your mind??

I had initially chosen a photographer for my wedding day and after some consideration and talking to some friends who had used them, I decided to switch to another photographer.  I'm wondering how I should let them know I've changed my mind.  Any advice??

THANKS!! Smile

  • If you havent put down a deposit, a simple phone call will do to let him know you are no longer considering him. As a professional, he should understand that.

If you are losing a deposit and cancelling a contract, I'd say your best bet is to do it in writing, sent certified mail.

  • First, read your contract (if you've gotten that far) and see what it says about the deposit.  Some require that you pay a portion on top of the deposit if you cancel within a certain period.

Then put it in writing.  Email is ok, if you've been communicating that way in the past, but if he/she isn't so good about reading them, you'll want to drop a copy in the mail.  Be polite, but explain why you've decided to move on.  If you like the other photographer's style better, explain that.  If this person has done something wrong, politely explain that, too.  It helps them to improve their business in the future.  Then outline your understanding of your contract requirements and thank them.

If you haven't actually hired them, just a phone call saying we've decided to go another direction is fine.
  • I was having the same issue. The photographer that I've used for years, that I'm really close with, offered to do my wedding pictures. I got pricing from her as well as several others, and I've found that she's much pricier than the more local ones. It seemed hard to break the news to her, but it's not a big deal. :) Just say "hey, after much consideration, we've chosen another photographer"
