traditional order of wedding and ceremony

I was just wondering what is the traditional(christian) order of a wedding from beginning of ceremony to the end of reception?

Re: traditional order of wedding and ceremony

  • I'm really not sure what you're asking. The ceremony comes first and then the reception.  But there are a zillion variables in between.  Examples:

Are the ceremony and reception in the same place or different places?

How long is the ceremony?  How long is the reception?

Is the reception a sit down meal; appetizers;  cake and punch?

Is there music and dancing at the reception?

What kind of ceremony are you having~full mass, church wedding (which I assume as you specifically mentioned Christian) or JOP?

What is the level of formality of your wedding?

How big is your guest list?  (That does affect your timeline)

What customs and traditions do you want to include (bouquet toss; first dances; toasts)

I'd need a lot more information to give you any kind of helpful answer to your question.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I really don't think there is any set norm, it's going to vary for everyone. If you want details for the ceremony speak with your officiant or church, since some have very specific aspects for the ceremony. This page may give you some ideas: http://weddings.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Order_of_Service:_A_Wedding_Ceremony

You may have more flexibility in your reception itinerary. If you are using a day of coordinator or your venue has a contact person to help plan your reception, they will be a big help is setting the order. Here is a sample of an reception itinerary.

  • I had a similar question when I first started planning.  I wasn't sure what order things typically happened and wanted to know just generally what was covered and when.

Look at the pp web pages to answer your questions, but remember that you can change the order up if you want.
  • Thanks everyone! :)
