Engagement ring and wedding band, which goes first???

I've decided that I'd like to wear both my engagement ring and wedding ring together. Which one is supposed to be closest to the body? I was assuming that the wedding band would be after the engagement ring but I wanted to be sure.

The wedding band goes on first (lowest on the finger) and the engagment ring on top of it.  Something about being closer to your heart or whatever.

You would think the wedding band would go on after to keep your "rock" secure but nope...wedding band first.

Although not "right", I wear my band on the outside.  All the women in my family do.  I was told by my grandmother that the engagement ring is the promise and the wedding band secures the promise to you forever.
