Dresses suck and I need some help!!

So basically all I want for my MOH, BMs and GWs (groomswomen... my FI is having girls on his side and I'm having groosmen on my side) is for their dresses to be the same length and the same color. I want them all to pick a style that is best suited for their body type, so long as they all look somewhat similar. So here's where I need advice... My wedding is at 6:00pm in July and I don't know whether to choose long or short. A couple of my BMs have been in wedding with long dresses and hated them because they were hot and combersome, and a couple had short and hated them because they were more casual and showed a not so flattering part of the body (lower legs)... have any of you been in a wedding? Which did you prefer? What are you having your MOH and BMs wear?

Re: Dresses suck and I need some help!!

  • That's a tough call.  Personally I would prefer short dresses in July, and by short, I mean tea-length, which should calm the fears of showing less favorite body parts.  I had a bridesmaid who was adamantly opposed to short dresses, but you can't please everyone, so you might as well please yourself.  That's really cool of you to let them pick the style of dress as long as it matches in color and length.
  • Think about your female guests and what they will wear, because your BMs should be dressed at least as formally (if not moreso) than those women. A really formal wedding calls for long dresses, but knee- and tea-length are fine for a wedding that's semi-formal. Your BMs should try some things on and see what works best for them. Some women look fab in tea-length while others look stumpy. Knee- and floor-length also flatters different women. Let them try things on, then take a vote and majority rules. Or consider letting them wear different lengths in the same color and fabric and designer if you are O.K. with that. I want my BMs in cocktail dresses, but one said that while she'll accept my wishes in the end, she'd rather try some stuff on first since she's short and is afraid of looking stumpy. I only have two BMs, so I told them that they just need to agree on a length between the two of them and I will go along with their decision.

  • I'd personally go for longer length or knee length.  Knee length if cocktail attire is OK for the wedding and long if its a bit more formal.I love tea length but it is SUCH a tricky length for many women to wear.
  • I'm more inclined to go with long dresses for a 6PM wedding unless you're having a more casual wedding or it's outside (or no AC). Also, I'd rather have my BMs be hot for a few minutes in between AC venues than my other BMs uncomfortable all night because they're showing off their problem areas. If you decide to go with long, look for an uncomplicated design in a less heavy fabric.
  • I would say to stay away from tea length.  It will definitely make the shorter girls look stumpy.  Either pick knee length or long.  I think you've gotten great advice from the pp and have to agree with all of it.
  • I agree with banana about the tea length. As someone who is heavier on the bottom, tea length really makes my legs look like tree trunks.
  • I would consider a length for your BM dresses to be along the same lines as the formality of your dress.  Like if you are going to wear something plain and casual I wouldn't choose a long formal looking BM gown, maybe something knee length.  If your dress is embroidered and beaded and has a chapel or cathedral length train, then I would go with something more formal and long.  Hope that helps....
