bridesmaids dresses - opinions please?...

I am really leaning toward having each of my 5 girls in a different dress, with some limitations. They will be from the same designer, they will be the same color, they will be floor length, and they will be satin. How do you guys feel about having 5 different dresses? Our wedding is not super formal - the ceremony is outside at a park, and we are both pretty laid back... thoughts??

Re: bridesmaids dresses - opinions please?...

  • It's a very popular option, because it lets each bridesmaid choose a dress that she likes and that flatters her, which means she will feel more comfortable (which will definitely show in your pictures).  It also allows each bridesmaid to spend what she chooses. One thing to consider: check with each bridesmaid privately to find out what her total budget is (including alterations), then be sure to choose a designer who has plenty of options to fit all their price points.  It kind of defeats the purpose of being able to fit everyone's budget if you go with a designer like Vera Wang or the Disney line.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • My dress is by Alfred Angelo. Its one of the line that has color in it. Mine will be white with pool blue. The girls seem to all be ok with the prices that line has to offer... And, I don't know, but I feel like the pool color would be hard to duplicate so if they all had different designers it would be noticable....
  • Pool is a tricky color, it's true.  AA's prices aren't too bad (and the nice thing is that all of their dresses come in every color, so there's a ton of selection; you might try an online wholesaler like pearlsplace.com or netbride.com to get a better deal.

  • Look at my siggy or my bio. All my girls were wearing black dresses by Jim Hjelm. I asked that they make them knee length, black, and taffeta. They liked being able to pick their dresses out.

  • I love it when brides let their BMs choose their own dress styles.  I think it's fine if 3 choose one style, and two another, etc.  4 of mine chose one, two another, and one another.  I don't think you need 5 different styles.  My one suggestion is if you aren't having a formal black-tie wedding then let them pick knee length gowns.  I don't think I or any of my friends would ever wear a floor length satin gown again.  Although I'd ask girls privately what they think about length, I have heard some girls say they prefer to be in floor length because they don't like to show their legs.
  • I love the idea.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • i think it's a great idea. I plan on doing the same with my girls. I have 3 different body types and haven't found one dress that will flatter ALL 3. I think your headed in the right direction!! good luck and congrats!!
  • I think it's awesome. I stood up in my friends wedding in july and there were 9 of us. We looked like a bunch of clones. At least the MOH could have looked different but no. Whatever, the dresses were beautiful and we all had a blast, it was the best wedding. I just think it was too much of the same. Or you can have 2 the same, 2 the same and the MOH her own style. I like originality though, as long as they are the same theme/color. Good luck!
