Wedding Party

*Manwa*

What happened to your ticker? I saw your posts in the E thread about the strippers at the Bach party and saw your ticker said something like one month and so many weeks. Did you push the wedding up?

ETA: or did your ticker get all kooky?

Re: *Manwa*

  • No worries. It's on purpose.

Our vow renewal ceremony/big party is on May 29th. We're actually getting married in December (I think we've finally settled on the 20th), so I figured I'd make my ticker reflect as much.

We can still be date twins though =)

    It's getting close! Exciting :^D

Threadjack: Have you got your results yet?
  • Hi, Kathryn!!

Yes. I got a 157. I'm not super impressed with myself. Under direction from my FI, I'm sending in the application anyway, but I'm not even going to begin planning my life around attending.

OMG KATHRYN! Your wedding is this week!!! Are you nervous yet??

  • Oh, that sucks a bit. Not the score, the fact that it's made you disappointed in yourself. But I'm glad you're still applying. I'd think it very un-Manwa-like if you didn't.

I KNOW!! As of yet I'm not nervous, about wedding stuff at least. My parents are coming in earlyish Thursday morning by overnight flight, so I'm spending Wednesday night in London otherwise I'd have to leave here about 5 am to make it to pick them up. And then 5 hours drive back. And Habibi has gone most of the way back the way we came, to Bahrain for a business trip. He'll be flying back for Wednesday afternoon although we won't be able to see each other - he'll be on the train back from London, I'll be in the car to it. I'm nervous but right now it's only about the air travel. It tends to make me anxious :^P

Pep talk: You can do a LOT worse than a 157.  A lot.  My first practice test I had a 151, I ended up with a 165 on the official test.  I didn't get smarter, I just figured out the test a lot better.  So trust me, should you ever take it again, I think you're in a good position.

@Kathryn: Congrats!  Good luck!  Enjoy everything :)  The day goes by SO quickly.

A word of warning from your friends at Cracked.com: Remember that text is going to be how you make your first impression over the internet; if every third word you type is misspelled, people will automatically assume that you're a moron.
  • Haha. FI said something to the effect of how "un-Mawalike" it would be of me not to just send in the application. So did my roommate. I still think I'm going to wait a year, but whatever.

I'm usually pretty good with air travel, but if I think about it too much I get a little freaked out.

Make sure you take LOTS of pictures the day of, kay?

I assume you're going to take your parents about to see the sights? What are you guys planning on doing?
Hah. True ;^) Kate, we do actually! Kind of. And we were able to find an end-unit house. We've put the deposit down but it's not available until November 30. So the kitties will still be in prison for a bit but at least there's an end in sight.
Further pep talk: The difference between a 157 and a 160 is about 4 questions, or one logic game.  You're very close. I personally think it's a waste of money to go to a law school that admits students with less than a 160 (elitist alert!) because 1) they often will fail out the bottom 10-25% of the class after they pay a year of tuition, 2) employers often ignore them during recruiting in favor of more "elite" institutions in the same geographic area (or are only interested in the top 5-10%, and 90-95% of students won't achieve that), and 3) they cost the same as high-ranking institutions (in some cases, even more). As I've told you previously, for what you want to do in the future I don't think law school will help you further your goals (and may even hinder them), but should you change your plans, I think you're within striking distance of the score you need.  Now, this is my advice and my experience, so take from it what you will.

  •
I totally walked away Manwa. I was wondering. I guess technically we'll be vow renewal date buddies. Lucas and I got married last February, but already had deposits and such put down for May 2011 and Dad wouldn't hear of cancelling, so we kept it. It's really complicated and I know it's frowned upon here, but you've got to do what you've got to do. Everyone's decisions are their own. Congrats Kathryn! Have a blast! We'd love to see pictures. Edited: I had Katie for Kathyrn and don't know if she goes by that or not.

I don't know your backstory, but I hope nothing was seriously wrong that you pushed your wedding date so far forward. I don't know, I just tend to associate pushing the wedding date forward with needing to do so for unfortunate reasons.

And thanks! I can't believe it's here already! Felt like it was never going to get here :^P (And your edit was correct, I do go by Kathryn.)
  • It was pushed up for complicated family and financial reasons. Everything worked out in the end, but like I said, my Dad wouldn't let us not have a celebration as originally planned. Since my mom is no longer alive, and I'm his yougest, and last to get married, we decided to keep the May date and do a vow renewal.

You're getting married in England correct? And you've moved there as well? That's amazing. I would love to live abroad. I studied for three months in Switzerland and another three months in Spain when I was in college and loved every minute of it.
In Response to Re: *Manwa* : Thanks =) I might take it next June. We'll see. What are your thoughts on a paralegal program in the meantime?
    Posted by Manwaithiel
Sorry just saw this.  I can't speak firsthand about being a paralegal because I've never worked as one (I was an auditor before I went to law school) but I have some idea of the market.<div>
</div><div>Bad news:  The market for paralegals is just as sucky now as it is for lawyers, FYI, though you have to commit a lot less time and money to it (depending on the state you may not even need to go through any sort of program).  Anyone related in any way, shape, or form to the legal market has just gone through a hemorrhaging of jobs.  Entire firms have shut down or merged, judges are hiring fewer clerks, and government jobs at all levels in many states have frozen hiring.  I recommend law shucks and above the law to give you a perspective on just how bad it's been.</div><div>
</div><div>Good news:  Many of my friends from law school worked as paralegals and said it was great experience. </div><div>
</div><div>I'm going to reiterate my advice that you avoid the legal market unless you truly want to be there; i.e. you are genuinely interested in working in the field.  It's not the "catch-all" industry it once was for smart people who don't do math.  I suspect it will be again someday, but not in the near future.  40,000 law students graduate each year and over 10,000 lawyers were laid off from big firms.  Oh and the baby boomer generation didn't realize they too would get old someday and either can't or won't retire.  You do the math :(</div><div>
</div><div>It's a brave new world out there.  All industries are in bad shape, more or less.  If I were in your shoes at 21 and just finishing college (speaking just for myself and what interests me), I would probably start looking at either the peace corps or teaching english abroad programs.  That's the kind of thing that would interest me and one of the things I wish I had done at your age.  I lived in Europe for a year when I was 20 but I wish I'd taken another year and lived somewhere else abroad.  Those are my interests--what are yours?  </div><div>
</div><div>This time in your life is so precious (god I feel old saying that) but it's so true--you're an adult yet unencumbered by so many things.  If I had to do the last 5 years over, I would have lived abroad again doing one of those things I mentioned.  At 26 I don't feel like I can really do it, now, though given the job market in both our fields, DH and I may just do it anyway, even though it would be terribly irresponsible of us :)  </div>

  • Kathryn, yay for your wedding being this week and yay for getting your kitties back at the end of the month!

  • Manwa, I was planning on paging you today, because something has been plaguing me.  Since you've already been paged, I guess I'm jacking your thread a bit...my apologies.

Please show me how to pronounce your SN.  Tell me what each piece of it rhymes with or spell it out phonetically.  Pretty please?  I need to have some sound I can associate your name with when I read your posts because my brain apparently works that way.  Right now, my brain calls you "man with eel" and I have a feeling that, while that's a pleasing grouping of words, I might be a bit off.

Oooh, sorry. I knew there was a post I'd missed. Glad it worked out in the end. It sounds like your circumstances especially called for the celebration to go on as planned.

Yep, married and living in England! I kind of regret not studying abroad, as you did, when I was in college....

And thanks frogurt! It's finally all coming together :^P
