NWR: High heels

I was reading an article on Yahoo yesterday about things you can buy for your heels to make them more comfortable (gel inserts, etc.)  There were a ton of comments on the article.  A lot of them had to deal with "women should just buy comfortable, sensible shoes and not worry about the fact that men like it when women wear heels!" and blah blah.

What is your opinion?  Do you wear heels?  Why do you wear them?

Do you buy any inserts or anything to make them more comfortable?

Re: NWR: High heels

  • I love heels!! I own upwards of 50 pairs and have no intentions of ever stopping lol

I buy them because I like how I look in them, it has nothing to do with men.

I haven't tried any of the inserts but might consider it. Believe it or not I am actually more comfortable in heel than flats or regular shoes. I have a very high arch and after a while in flats my feel ache something fierce, no problem in heels though. And I often find myself dragging my feet and tripping more when I don't have heels on.
  • I wore heels to the office every day and walked quite a bit in them.  The best advice I have is to spend the money on a good pair.  It's the cheap ones that are going to kill your feet (and they'll wear out quickly).  I'm still wearing a pair of 3 inch black leather stilettos from Nine West after seven years and they are still really comfortable.

  • I wear heels a lot because flats irritate my feet more AND because all of my jeans are about an inch or two too long.

I also walk about 3-4 miles a day to get to work (broken up, round trip and all) but I wear tennis shoes for that.  I see a lot of ladies wearing heels and cross my fingers that they aren't going too far.

I probably should buy more inserts.  I honestly avoid the more uncomfortable shoes, and wear out the ones I love.
  • Someone gave me a pair of those gel inserts, and I really don't find them helpful. My problem with heels isn't the pain, it's that I have crap ankles that will just give after a while. Depends on the shoe how bad it is, and it's not related to height, just the particular shoe, so I never know until I've been wearing them for a while whether a pair will turn out to be better or worse for me.

But I still wear heels because I like how they look. I like it, not men like it. I actually confuse men here because at 5'9" I am a giant, and people always ask why I wear heels if I'm already so tall. I just commute in flat shoes and then put my heels on at the office since I can't manage walking and the bus in 3.5".
  • I wear heels when I want to look sexy. I feel very dumpy in flats. So it's super important to buy comfy shoes. Same goes for my character shoes. The crap ones from Capezio cost probably $60 and eat up your heels and make your knees ache....mine are LaDucas and cost close to $300. 5 years later, I still use my shoes!

  • I wear pretty sensible shoes to work most days. But they're nice shoes that I've spent a lot of money on because they help me be on my feet, up, down and all around all day and they aren't just unsupportive flats.

When we have events going on, I do wear heels. And I agree with what you all have said: spend the money on a few good pairs of heels and you'll never regret it. I love how heels look, how they make me stand and how quickly they dress up even a simple outfit. I'm a fan, but I don't wear them all the time.

  • Oh, and those gel things are uber suck, in my experience. They always wad up in the toe of the shoe so it feels like the ball of your foot has some squishy, uncomfortable growth on it.

  • High heels are hot and make your legs look great, you look taller and therefore skinnier!

I cannot wear heels to work since I work at a manufacturing company (or have to bring a change of shoes for the time I spend on the plant floor), but I do enjoy wearing them out at night.

  • I wear both heels and flats liberally, but I get far more blisters in flats!

  • Standing for more than an hour in my high heels starts to hurt.  I love how they look, so I wear them on days I give tests and won't be standing much.  The first time I wore my new high heels was when I had a 3 hour class.  I ended up lecturing barefoot for half the class.

My 1 inch heels are more comfortable than anything else.  I never wore flats until grad school b/c I love the kitten heels so much.
  • I wear heels all the time.  I have a two block uphill walk to work (I know, that's not very far compared to what some other people have to walk) but I wear tennis shoes into work and then put my heels on when I get to my desk.

I wear heels because I like how I feel and look in them, and I like feeling like I'm on a runway when I'm walking down a long hallway. :)  I honestly don't think H notices much when I wear heels.  I was recently telling him about how I'm afraid I will forget my heels one day and show up to work with only my tennis shoes.  He told me to just leave my heels at work, and I said "but I wear my heels all the time even outside of work."  He said "you do?" haha.

  • I have 200+ pairs of heels and LOVE every single one of them.(about 30 of them are in a nice container underneath my desk at the office)
I will never give them up even though I am 5'10 and already a giant.

Like others have said I commute in flats and rock the heels in the office and out on calls... they just make the outfit...

PLUS, when I was in college I did a speech about how heels instantly lift 5 pounds off of any frame- just look in the mirror with flats on... then put on heels - 5 pounds GONE! :)

I even played a couple of innings of softball in a paid of heels - it was a dare and I didn't break or bruise anything!
