Re: WPBP of the day

  • Are you participating in the WPB Secret Santa? Yes. I always like to do them. My club board did them last year.
Do you know who your person is? No. I knew mostly everyone on the list except for a few names.
What is something you want this year for xmas? A new computer which I know DH is giving me because mine is really old now. I also want things like vocal scores.
Have you ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it? Not that I can recall. I also don't regift anyone.

  • Are you participating in the WPB Secret Santa? No. Mailing to/from Chile would be a nightmare - I could very well end up being a secret Valentine.

Do you know who your person is? N/A

What is something you want this year for xmas? Possibly a Kindle because my friend has been going on and on about hers, but I haven't really thought about it much.

Have you ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it? My dad gave me earrings he bought for his wife - she really doesn't wear white gold, so he was going to return them and get her the same ones in yellow gold, but instead he gave them to me. I am not complaining about re-gifted diamonds! I don't think I've ever had someone try to pass off a re-gift as an original present though, or if they did, they got away with it.
  • Are you participating in the WPB Secret Santa? No...I was off getting married when all this was planned.  Maybe next year!

Do you know who your person is? N/A

What is something you want this year for xmas? An e-reader, I really don't care which kind.  Also, a new bed, since ours is so tiny, but I doubt that's something we'll receive!

Have you ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it? Oh I have no idea.

  • Are you participating in the WPB Secret Santa? Yes.
Do you know who your person is? Do you mean do I know who has me? No.

What is something you want this year for xmas? I asked H for a Troy Polamalu jersey. :)  There are a couple of cookbooks I want too.

Have you ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it? I'm fairly sure I have.  One of H's relatives gave us this like glass coach and carriage figurine thing for our wedding.  They know us really well, they've been to our house, we don't own anything like that, so I find it hard to believe that they really think it's something that we would like/something that would go well in our house.  I think it was a re-gift, but idk for sure.

    I am!

Do you know who the person is that you were given?
Not really well, but from what I know, I like her, so yay!

What is something you want this year for xmas?
I want an iPod dock for my desk at work ... but I have such pain in the @$$ requirements for it , that I know nobody's touching that one with a 10-foot pole

Haveyou ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it?
It wasn't really a re-gift, per se, but one year a friend of mine gave me a bag full of freebies she had collected overtime from the make-up counters at Macy's.  It was odd.

  • Ooh, to all the ladies talking about Kindles and E-readers: I absolutely love my Kindle (I have the K2) and think everybody that reads a lot should invest in one.

And I was one of those people that insisted I "would miss paper books too much". Well, it turns out, I don't, lol. Don't get me wrong, when it comes to my absolute favorite authors, I will still buy a physical copy. But in general, I love that not only can I get a book any time, anywhere ... and now I'm not cluttering the house up with books that I've only read once. I've been pushing like crazy for DH to get one, because he's just as bad as I am (Actually, if DH decides he wants one, I'm pushing for him to take mine so I can get the K3 Tongue out)

  • Meg, in Chile books are super expensive - even Chilean books in Spanish are subject to this ridiculous tax, and imported books in English are even more expensive. I always stock up when I go home, but it would be nice to hear about a good book and just read it right then instead of waiting for a trip to the US.
  • Are you participating in the WPB Secret Santa? no

Do you know who the person is that you were given? NA

What is something you want this year for xmas? hair-straightener.  I've been using a hand-me-down from an apartmentmate senior year.  It's kinda busted.

Have you ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it? FMIL openly passed on some matching notebooks to me.  They've been sitting around for a year now, but I realized one of them would be great for a guestbook at the wedding!
  • Emily (And others interested in the E-readers) I don't really know much about the Nook or other E-readers, but I can definitely tell you about the Kindle:

I'm not really sure if it costs more money to download books outside of the US (I've heard some stories about people getting charged extra for being out of the country when downloading, but I've never had to deal with it, so I don't know for sure), but even if there is a charge, it's still probably cheaper than what you'd be paying now for most physical books. Most books really are $9.99 or less, and most classics are either free or less than $2.00. When it comes to new hardcovers, those get a little pricier, but even those offer considerable savings when compared to the physical book (I recently downloaded a new hardcover for $12.50, the physical book cost $27.00).

And I love the pre-order feature. If you pre-order something on the Kindle, it shows up in there at like 2am the day the book comes out, so you have it first thing in the morning.

I went back and forth between the Kindle and the Nook a lot (Honestly the Kobo and the Sony E-reader just didn't impress me in the reviews), they are actually pretty competitive in price and capabilities (Nook didn't have 3G at the time, so that did tip the scale for me a bit). What finally made the decision for me, was I just plain preferred the overall asthetics of the Kindle. I like the keyboard, I hate touch screens. I know a few people that have picked the Nook for the exact opposite reason, and they are just as happy as I am.

But overall, I'd definitely say: if you read a lot, get an E-reader. It really is a great investment.

  • Nope, it doesn't cost more for my friend - she just has it connected to her US credit card and address, so it's the same as if she were in the US and just traveling to Chile from what I understand.
  • Are you participating in the WPB Secret Santa?  Yup!

Do you know who the person is that you were given?  I do!  Now I just need to think of something good for her.

What is something you want this year for xmas?  Honestly, I haven't given it much thought.  Since we're moving in April, we're trying to hold off on acquiring more stuff that will need to be packed.

Have you ever been given a re-gift? If so, what was it?  Probably, but I don't know for sure.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • And on the eReader front, I love my iPad to little bitty pieces.  The iBooks interface is fantastic, and since there are apps for the Kindle and Nook, you have access to those books as well.  Plus, the iBookstore includes everything by Project Gutenberg, so you can get a wide selection of the classics for free.  Plus there's all the other stuff it does.  I"m totally hooked.
