Getting bridesmaids dresses made

I am having a hard time finding information about the steps nessisary for having all my bridesmaids dresses made, I would like them all to be able to have the dress they want but have them all made out of the same fabric. Can anyone help?

Re: Getting bridesmaids dresses made

  • Are you making the dresses?  Are you having a seamstress make the dresses?

  • You'll need to find a fabric, find a seamstress, get measurements, find a pattern(s), and go to it. I don't think that sewing dresses should ever be the way to go unless there is NOTHING on the market that you like. It's oftentimes not cheaper and takes way more time.

Do yourself a favor and hire a professional.  Don't try to make them yourselves and don't let a relative try to make them.  Too often relatives overestimate their skill and realize too late in the game that they can't do it, leaving everyone to scramble to find a replacement.

Like PPs said, I would try as much as possible to find something in a store unless you absolutely can't.

  • I agree - there are many many designers that offer dresses in the same fabric but many styles.  I'd save yourself some frustration and look into that first.

Otherwise, I would suggest speaking to the seamstress first and letting her know the details and getting her input on fabrics and patterns.  Then let the girls in on it and pick their preferred pattern etc.  Don't decide on things yourself first as you may be disappointed if you are unable to get what you imagined because he seamstress can't do it.
  • All the dresses for my sisters wedding are being made (by a profesional).  We told him an idea of what we want, he drew it up, and it will take himabout 3 weeks to make.  It is also cheaper than the other dresses we looked at.  Just do some research for locals.  I like having dresses made personally, because you get the absolute perfect fit and get exactly what you want.

  • Try some of the major designers like Alfred Angelo, David's, Jasmine, etc...you can search by fabric- pick a fabric/color and then your BMs can choose the style. Any bridal salon can also help you with this process (although it is open cheaper to order online like through Pearl's place).
  • I had mine made by a professional seamstress and they turned out fine.  They were $80 a piece.  Believe me, I searched high and low to find a dress I was okay with.  My biggest beef was that a lot of dresses had crappy fabrics, and the only ones with a fabric I liked tended to be on the higher end.

However, I know not everyone has had such a great experience with seamstresses.  They can be more expensive, so I was personally lucky that it turned out to be so reasonable.  They can turn out poorly if it's not a professional or if you don't really know what you're doing when you put the fabric and pattern together.  I'm someone who sews so I think I had a better idea than most when it comes to figuring out fabric what to use with a given pattern.

My advice - tread lightly.  Don't run to a seamstress without thoroughly scouring stores (bridal and department alike) and don't ask her to just make it - get a quote on what each dress would cost.  A skilled seamstress will know exactly how long it will take to make a dress and what materials will run her.  If she doesn't know, then she's probably trying to rip you off.
