Wedding Party

Junior Bridesmaids

My two girl cousins (age 9 and 11) immediately wanted to be flower girls as soon as I got engaged. My aunt and mom explained to them that they are a bit too old, but that we would involve them somehow.

A few people have mentioned making them junior bridesmaids, but our wedding party is already large and I'm just not sure about it. Also, I've never been to a wedding with JBMs?

Do you think they will be upset if we ask them to help with programs or something similar? I realize it's not the same but I'm struggling here!

Re: Junior Bridesmaids

  • I don't see why they can't be flower girls.  Who cares if they are 9 and 11.  If they want to be flower girls then what is the problem?

  • I've seen adult flower girls.  As long as they're okay with the role, anyone else should be okay with them having it.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Our FGs were 9 1/2 and our RBs were 11.  They loved it.

  • That is true, I really wouldn't mind if they wanted to be flower girls. The issue is that my FI's family is halfway across the country and he will already have only a small amount of people coming to our wedding. (We are having a second reception in his hometown a month later). I felt like the majority of the wedding was my family so I was totally ok with his niece being the flower girl.

  • Why can't you have three FGs?

  • I guess I never thought of that! 3 FGs wouldn't be overkill?

  • I've seen three flower girls before and didn't blink an eye.

    Why not?

We're talking three kids walking up an aisle for a total of 15-20 seconds.  Hardly overkill.  We had two and no one batted an eye.

  • Great! Thanks for the advice.

  • Not gonna lie, I think three FGs is a bit much, but that's usually because younger kids can be so unpredictable, more so in groups.  If the kids in question are older, there's less chance of some sort of major malfunction at the ceremony, so it's not as big a deal.

If you, your FI, and the three girls in question are all happy with there being three flower girls, that's all that really matters.

  • I am having 3 flower girls in my wedding. Since we are blending 2 families, his little girld are going to be my flower girls. They will be 8, 6, and 5 when we get married.
You know you are truly blessed when you find that one who completes you, makes you totally happy, and feels your pain from the other room. The one you feel lost without, the one that makes you laugh, the one that makes you cry. The one that makes you wonder how you can be so lucky. Congratulations to everyone who has found "the one."
