Flower Girl/Ring Bearer Question

Fiance has a niece who will be almost three by the time we get married so we definitely want her to be the Flower Girl, but having some trouble with Ring Bearer--of the two boys I'd really like for Ring Bearer one will be just over 2 and the other will be just under 2. I know just under 2 is really young but I'd really like him to be one of two ring bearers because the other two children are from fiance's side.

Has anyone ever had children this young as Ring Bearer/Flower Girl? How did it work out? Any tips or suggestions? My thought is to talk to the mom of the boy who will be just under 2 and say I'd really like him to be one of the ring bearers but since he was just born I'll leave it up to her to decide closer to the moment whether she thinks he could do it or not, and if she doesn't think so, no big deal.

The other option I'm thinking about is maybe the FG and RB from fiance's side walk down and then have the second ring bearer from my side walked down by his older brother (who is my godson) and older sister--who will each be 13/14 by the time the wedding comes around--but I think that's tooooo many people.

Any thoughts/tips/suggestions?

  • I agree with stagemanager. The only times I've seen child attendants that young, it has ended in tantrums and screaming. I mean, sometimes they behave. But you're taking a big risk that you'll end up with a frightened, overstimulated toddler with no idea what's going on.

I have a similar issue.  I have one niece (who will be 4.5 by wedding) and one nephew (1.5 by wedding). I really want both to participate, but worried he won't understand. I have a godson who will be almost 4 by wedding, who I can have as a backup plan if my nephew is not ready for the duty. (FI doesn't have young kids in family.)

I think a mother will know if her kid can handle the duties. I've taught young children, and practicing with them ahead of time by carrying a pillow around I think would help. I've seen young children be pulled in a wagon by an older child, that was cute.

I guess it's a waiting game, to see how the kid turns out, whether he will be able to handle the task.
