Maid of Honor & Matron of Honor Ordering

I have got a dilemma. I have selected my best friend to be my maid of honor and my sister to be my matron of honor. Since my sister and I are not that close I would like my maid of honor standing next to me followed by my matron of honor then the rest of my bridal party. However, my sister has since told me that this is not right. She feels that since she had me has her maid of honor, she should stand behind me at my wedding. I know that either order is acceptable but is it wrong to stick to my gut and say she will be second?

Re: Maid of Honor & Matron of Honor Ordering

  • I'm sure Retread is correct about the traditional order. However, what difference does it really make who stands where? I get that you're not as close with your sister but it's not like you'll be standing at the altar chatting with one another. Tbh I would probably have my sister stand closest to me if it was important to her. But you're certainly within your rights to have them in whichever order you'd prefer.

  • Put them in whichever order you prefer. I'm a little confused why your sister is your Maid of Honor (or even in the WP at all) if you're not that close.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I agree with Addie. There's no such thing as "wedding party backsies" - if one of my BMs did that at her wedding she'd have at least 20 people standing up there with her lol! Have the people you are closest with stand next to you. Considering you mentioned your sister and you aren't super close she should be honored to have been asked, not complaining on her place in the processional line.
  • what about having your friend stand closest to you and your sister sign your marriage license? It's a great way to consider her for a special role, while allowing you to have your friend closest to you.
