Exhausted.  For whatever reason I decided to do a 3.5 mile walk around cooper river today in 92 degree heat.  I really wanted to get out of the gym for at least one day.

  • Waiting for DH to get home.  He had a late meeting, so he's stuck driving home alone in traffic.  So I'm just watching some Mythbusters, playing Farmville, and contemplating some ice cream.  Apricot ale, or mint brownie chunk?

  • I'm half here. DH and I are hooking up our new tv ... so I have to hold screws in place when necessary (I'm such a good helper Smile)

I literally just got a FB message asking for my address so I can get mailed an invite to a baby shower. It's for a second child ... is that an etiquette violation, or am I imagining that?

My understanding is that second child is eyebrow-raising, but fine (especially if it's a different gender, since you'd probably want new clothes for it), but anything beyond that is a no-no.  Could be wrong, though.

  • IMHO, if it's a different gender than the first child, or more than a few years since the first child, it's fine.  If they had a baby boy two years ago and are now expecting another, it's gift-grabby (at least it is to me).

  • Meg, I'm kind of leaning that way, but the apricot ale ice cream is homemade, so I feel a bit obligated.

Meg - I just read the thread where you were telling us about your "friend"'s wedding.  You are a better person than I am.  My brothers would have been taking bets on how I would get back at her.

The "first" child is 3, and we don't know if it's different gender because the parents are insisting on "being surprised".

ETA: I don't begrudge them for wanting to be surprised ... I'm just kind of feeling weird about a second shower when the older child is just a toddler.

  • If that's the case, tacksville.  5 years and I would say, "Yeah, they probably don't have baby stuff anymore and this was probably a 'surprise!' kid."

I was invited to a baby shower earlier this year that was impossible for me to attend, the host and mom knew was impossible to attend, and oh btw, I hadn't seen the new mom in about three years and didn't even know she was pregnant until I got the invite.  I declined and didn't send a gift.

I know kids are expensive, but they don't give you a carte blanche to be gift-grabby.

I think the baby shower is a little uncalled for then.

    How's the TV hookup coming?
    image
    AKA GoodLuckBear14
  • TV is coming along, DH has only started cursing at the instruction manual once, lol.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the shower thing was weird. That settles that I will be declining and probably just sending a Babies R Us gift card later on.

Since I'm the only one on here right now who's not married can I tell you about my biggest I told you so with this wedding?  Guests are staying in downtown Philly and the wedding is about 30 minutes away.  FI told me to rent vans for my side if I wanted to but there was no way anyone on his side would want to use them because they'll prefer renting cars.  So far every RSVP has said yes to taking the vans.  He actually looked crushed when we got more RSVP's from his side yesterday.

  • I'd say it's a bit tacky - particularly tacky if they did the full-on registry.  I attended a baby sprinkle for DH's cousin last year when she was expecting their 2nd and a boy. But the shower was intimate and just for  the ladies to give little boy clothes - nothing more.

The only one shower deal is one of the reasons why DH and I are going for gender neutral items on a registry.  And we wanted to be surprised anyway but this is yet another "practical" reason to be surprised.
  • Aerin, I hope you went for the mint brownie chunk.  I don't like chunks of fruit/fruit flavor in things like ice cream.

I spent the day freezing in Starbucks because our internet was out and just finished watching Perfume.
  • Heh, a baby sprinkle.  I love it.

My English teacher junior year of high school told me that she wanted to be surprised, but was also a Disney fan, so she decorated the nursery in Winnie the Pooh and the color green, since it was gender neutral.  I can't remember if my sister chose to be surprised, but she went with a classic Mickey thing for the nursery.  I did a painting of the starburst logo from the cartoons (which I really need to mail to them, the kid is coming up on a year old but shipping is expensive...)

I love the idea of a baby sprinkle.  This is the first time I've heard of it.

  • I thought it was cute - and it was clearly not the idea of the mom to be.

DH and I are toying with nursery ideas.  I'm leaning towards a sea creature/beach theme.   We live so close to the water that I think llooking at that stuff would be so sweet for a boy or a girl.  Plus, it could go with the palm tree lamp that DH has had for years.  And the thing is HUGE!
  • Any pictures of a palm tree lamp?  I bet that would look neat in the nursery.

When we were planning, we knew we could only afford 2 meat entrees. We knew chicken for sure, but we kept fighting over prime rib vs. salmon. I rallied for prime rib because, to me it was the more "common sense" choice. DH kept insisting "Oh, my family eats salmon, if we have that, they'll all order it". We didn't have to pick until literally a week before the wedding (Which happened to be the week of Christmas). So we decided to settle it "like grown ups" (Sarcasm), and just flat-out asked everybody at their Christmas party which of the 2 they'd pick.

Prime rib won in a landslide. Not going to lie, I did much gloating<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

A friend of mine did an outdoors theme.  She painted grass on blue walls, put glow in the dark stars on the ceiling.  There were dragonflies and butterflies pained on the walls and hanging on fishing line from the ceiling.  My mom made her a baby afghan that had caterpillars, ladybugs, spiders, butterflies and dragonflies on it.

  • I'll have to find photos of the palm tree lamp!     I'd take one now but you'd see photos of my very messy bedroom.

Plus it would look oddly kinky since we have a video camera pointed at the bed.  DH still isn't sleeping well so he's recorded his sleep for the last two nights.
  • Aw, I like the "sprinkle" idea.

And if you're going for a "sea creature" theme, you have to remember to get one of  these:

The one thing I didn't win was part of the music.  I'm making my own CDs (sorry Aerin - no He Plays the Fiddle) for the reception and FI insisted that at least two songs from his favorite band be included.  I'm trying now to fit Nirvana into the playlist where it won't sound like somebody hijacked the sound system.

And Meg, that toy is too freakin' cute!!

At the Joan Rivers roast, we were like, "Who is this random chick?"  And then the answer was, "Oh, she's the funniest one here, that's who."  We DVRed the 1am showing (apparently it's not uncensored, but just less censored), but we couldn't watch it last night because we got home late.

  • I first saw it actually in Tide's sig, she has a pink one for Taryn. I got Sophia a blue one (She's only 19 months, but blue is clearly her favorite color) a while ago to help her sleep. They're soooooo cute, and they actually work for getting into a sleep routine.
