When to send?

Our wedding is August 25th and we are getting our invites ready. When do we send? I have seen a lot of places that say give 3 months before the date. Is that "right"? What about the RSVP? Our caterer needs final count a month before the date but won't we need to allot time to call down non-responders? Thanks for the help!

Re: When to send?

  • I will never get why some caterers want exact numbers 30 days out. That's just completely unnecessary, since the food certainly  shouldn't be bought more than a few days out at most anyway.

But it's supposed to be 6-8 weeks for invitations. For August 25th, the earliest you should send them is roughly June 25th. Allow a few days between the RSVP date and whenever your caterer needs the numbers so you can call anyone you don't have a response from yet. If your numbers are due July 25th, have the RSVP date July 21st or thereabouts. Wait a day or two for cards sent on the due date to arrive, because lots of people do that. Then call.

I get it - staffing and cooking. A wedding of 100 will take an extra staff member and more time to prepare (I.e. another employee) than a wedding of 75.

    Thanks for the help though!

<div>That is still bs, my mil is a caterer & she can do it with a week ta 2 weeks notice. It is just some bs they come up with so they can get more money from people who give them a # then more people decline as something comes up & they are now locked into that #. </div>

my wedding is august 25th, and we are sending them 3 months prior, our hall wants a month notice as well, especially since we have a big guest list.  but maybe things are done differently here then in the states.

I call major BS on this as well.  A venue trully only needs a 2 week notice.  A month is ridiculous because they won't even order the food needed unitl a week out.

In your case I'd probably send them at 10 weeks, which is arguably a little early but you'll need RSVPs back so soon that this is probably your best best. I'd set the RSVP deadline 5 weeks in advance, wait a day or two and then start calling.

  • My venue also wants a final count 30 days in advance. We are getting married June 30th and sent our invites out April 27th with a due date of May 25...still waiting on most of them :(

  • I think 3 months early is way to early.  10 weeks tops.  If your venue needs a month (which I agree, is total BS), send them out 8 weeks in advance.  Regular US Mail only takes about 3 days.  People will have the invitation by the 7 week mark, and still have 3 weeks to reply or for you to follow up.
