Wedding Party

Post-Wedding commentary...not MY wedding...

I was at a family wedding this weekend, and since I see some of you posting "post-party" comments, I thought I would give mine as well :)

The Good:

It was at a country club...beautiful weather, beautiful ceremony outside.
Uneven sides, in different dresses all in seafoam green (one pregnant BM as well...my cousin's wife, and she was glowing!)
Cocktail/hors d'oeuvres hour was perfect...although the bartender was a bit heavy-handed with the rum in my rum and cokes haha
Food was fantastic!
Cake was beautiful, not overly fancy but pretty.
They had the Pittsburgh traditional "cookie table" loaded with yummy cookies and treats, as well as goodie bags, so I brought some home for my kids.
Bride and groom were blissfully happy, bride looked like a beautiful princess :)
They had a WP dance, but the WP was asked to dance with their own DH/SO/etc instead of with some person that they didn't know :)
I love the songs that my cousins pick for their first dances...this one picked an INXS song and her sister had a song by The Cure at her wedding :)

The Not-so-good:

I was told that this was an adults-only wedding, then arrive to see that everyone else has brought their kids but I wasn't allowed to...that seriously miffed me, especially since there were family there from OOT who had never seen my children and I wanted them to meet them :(

Actually, that's probably the ONLY thing that I had a problem with...but that sort of bummed me out for the majority of the night.

  • Glad it was fun!

Sorry about the thing with the kids. Just throwing in my two cents ... I also had a kid-free wedding (simply because we didn't have the room for them, otherwise I would've loved to have had them there). Someone called us a few days before the wedding saying that she didn't have a sitter and had to bring her kids along if she was going to attend our wedding. We knew it wasn't fair to the other parents and wanted to say no, but we got a LOT of flack and absolutely no support from MH's dad about it since it was his family, so we just caved in order to avoid an argument. The kids were very well-behaved but I think some other parents were mad and thought we were favoring these kids over the other kids in the family. I'm still so mad that FIL wouldn't back us up.

So, food for thought, these people might have complained about their kids not being invited, or they may have just brought them unannounced. Try not to take it personally.

  • I considered that particular option. My one cousin is from pretty far away so I'm glad that she brought her daughter. I also considered that my dad was misinformed when he told us that we should find a sitter...but who knows. It's over and done with now, and honestly a part of me is glad that we had a night out without the kids, but it stings just a bit...

We had a couple people bring their uninvited children even though we told them after we got their RSVP that their children weren't invited.  You did the right thing by not ignoring what they put on the invite.

Is it also possible that they had a cut-off for kids?  We cut off past first cousins--beyond that would not only have been kids we don't know, but would have increased our total by about 30 people.  I'm also a firm believer that if you aren't close with the kids, you shouldn't have to invite them.  Not to say that they wouldn't love your kids, but how many degrees of separation are we talking about?  You also know that your wedding isn't a venue to show off your darlings, right?

And come on--your kids didn't want to go to a boring wedding anyway.  You got to spend a night drinking rum and cokes and eating adult-friendly hors d'oeuvres not worrying about potty breaks or bedtimes or anything like that.  If I were in your shoes I would have enjoyed that :)

  • I think it's ok to be a tad miffed and over it at the same time.

Sounds like you had a blast, and would have had a blast either way!
