Bridesmaids Dresses

I am wanting to get bridesmaids dresses that fit every shape and size.  Some have suggested separates, but I'm not really interested in that.  I read in a magazine to pick out a color and fabric, then have the girls pick their dress.  I love this idea, especially b/c I want it to be one piece instead of separates.  Any ideas of good dress lines that offer plenty of choices for my girls?  I appreciate any help!  Thanks.

Re: Bridesmaids Dresses

  • Start by asking each of them (privately, like maybe through an e-mail) for her budget. Whatever the lowest price point is will be the price point you need to stay under for everyone.

Then you can get a better idea of designers that you can look for. For example, Alfred Angelo and David's Bridal are in the $200 and under range. If your girls have higher budgets, you may be able to look into designers like Jim Hjelm, Watters, etc.

I used AnnTaylor.com for my bridesmaids. I had two bridesmaids and with the color/fabric/length I wanted for them, they had three styles to pick from. JCrew.com is another option if you have thin, non-busty bridesmaids.

  • If you want something to fit everyone, I highly suggest an A-line or something that isn't too form-fitting. I had my girls try on lots of different types of gowns and the form fitting ones showed every imperfection, even in satin. You don't want bellybuttons showing through =). I do think that satin is probably more forgiving than an organza or something because it is thicker.

  • Every company does what you're asking. You need to just find a company that you like the quality of the dresses and/or the styles that are offered. We used Jim Hjelm and my girls LOVED the selection.

  • Like a PP suggested, I would privately find out their budget and also get an idea of what they like in a dress. If you can't take all of them to look at dresses, at least bring your MOH so you get the opinion of someone who will actually have to wear the dress. I'm a BM in a wedding this summer and the bride e-mailed all of us a selectino of 6 dresses and we could choose the one we wanted to wear. She went through a local bridal store, but David's Bridal is usually really reasonable and you can probably find some in the $150 range.

  • I am doing the same thing too of the same color and fabric...I picked out three dresses and letting the girls pick out of the three...my sister (Matron of Honor) said I had to find a style with dress straps as she will not be wearing a strapless dress and my other sister (Maid of Honor) did not really like any of my choices, but that's okay! My other BMs like the styles and they will fit any body type.

  • Aria has a good selection of dresses in the same color and fabric, but they are not in many stores.
  • I just told them to wear black.  If we hadn't gone with a black and white wedding, I think I probably would have told them to wear something in any shade of a particular color, probably blue.  I totally love that look, and it definitely takes a lot of stress off of everyone involved.

If you're looking for a specific shade, you can give the girls a fabric swatch or paint chip and ask them to match it as closely as possible.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
