What is the typical age of a ringbearer?

I have asked my favorite nephew to be in my wedding party & the only spot would be as a ringbearer - what is the typical age for these guys. My sister says it's usually 8 or under but nephew will be around 14 at the time of my wedding. Good idea to have him as one or not?

Re: What is the typical age of a ringbearer?

  • I think that a 14 year old boy would bre really embarrassed to be a ring bearer. He could be a groomsman, bridesman, usher, reader, or gift bearer (catholic wedding), though. I think of ring bearers and flower girls as being the same age range, and I know that when I was 14 I would have been insulted to have been asked to be a flower girl.

Even sides are not necessary, so if you want him in your WP, have him be a groomsman or a bridesman. Personally, i wouldn't ask him to be a ring bearer unless your flower girl is 15 and HOT!.

  • At 14, he would probably feel awkward being a ring bearer because it is usually a spot reserved for little kids.  The general rule is that they're too old when they can tell you that they don't want to do it because they're too old.

Why not make him a Jr. Groomsman and have him hold the rings?  Other options are that he can act as an usher or do a reading

  • That's a great idea being a groomsman & holding the rings. He won't have a partner but I'm sure he won't mind that. It was my FI's idea to have him in the wedding party since my nephew isn't too happy that I'm getting married, lol. He loves me & wants me for himself, lol.
  • It's fine if there isn't a coordinating BM.  Even WPs are becoming less and less common.

Make the poor kid an usher or groomsman!

    ringbearers are 8 max
  • Average age is 4-8....14 is too old. Have him be a regular groomsman.
  • My nephew is going to be my ringbearer, and he will only be 4. If your nephew is okay with it, why not? Just make sure he won't feel embarassed. You could always find a different role for him.
