Bridesmaids Dresses

I have a few questions regarding my bridesmaids and their dresses. First off I have 7 bridesmaids. My wedding is going to be in September 2012. I am wondering when I should start looking for my girl's dresses. I have had people telling me to do it in the next month or so and then I have others saying I can wait until 6 months before the date. Now being someone who likes to get things done right away, I naturally want to do it sooner than later but I don't know what the right answer is. Also, my bridesmaids are all different shapes and sizes and I would really prefer them all to wear the same dress. However I also want them all to be comfortable. Is it smart to just pick one girl to try on some dresses and I can choose what I like best or am I supposed to take all 7 girls with me to figure it out?  Please help
