Bridesmaid Dress Length

Is it appropriate to have knee length or tea length bridesmaids dresses in an evening wedding?  I love the look of them both and want my bridesmaids to be able to recycle the dresses.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Length

  • The length isn't what's going to make the dresses re-wearable, but a shorter dress can still be formal enough for an evening wedding.  That will be determined by the style and fabric of the dress.  But if you want the girls to re-wear them, consider letting them pick the dresses themselves and just specifying a length and colour.

  • I don't think it would be inappropriate unless you're taking pictures outside in the winter or it's a black tie affair where all the women will be in floor length ballgowns.

Knee length tends to be easier for people to wear, tea length often hits at an odd spot on the calf on non-models and can look awkward.
  • Yes, so long as it isn't a very formal wedding.

Knee-length is easier for most people to wear, just so you know. If you're worried about the formality and having them wear them again, maybe you could have them just get their own black knee-length cocktail dresses? I don't know if that totally rubs you the wrong way. Just a suggestion.
  • My BMs wore black knee-length cocktail dresses (silk taffeta) and my reception started at 6 p.m. Most of my female guests wore cocktail dresses (Mom was in a knee-length suit) or casual-ish long dresses (not formal evening gowns).

Unless you think that your female guests will show up in long formal evening gowns, don't worry about it.

  • As long as your wedding isn't very formal, that's fine.

Tea length is a VERY difficult length to wear though.  I originally wanted it until I saw that it flattered none of my BMs.
  • Our wedding is at 5:30 PM, and my girls are wearing knee- or tea-length dresses (their choice) in red.  I let them pick because I figured they'd either get something they could wear again, or get something that they didn't mind wearing once.  I don't see a problem with wearing shorter dresses at an evening wedding.  Think of it this way -- most of your guests are going to be wearing short dresses, unless it's a black-tie wedding.  And I think if it was a black-tie wedding, you wouldn't be questioning this anyway.  Good luck!
