Wedding Party

Bridesmaids dresses when they live all over

The girls in my wedding party live in different cities. I was told by 3 different stores that all the dresses need to be ordered from the same store because the fabric used to make the dresses could be slightly different from one place to the next. One of my bridesmaids is telling me this is a lie. Is it? How have others ordered the bridesmaids dresses?

  • The stores are talking about dye lots. No, they don't have to be ordered from the same store. Each store is telling you that so that they get ALL the sales. Who wouldn't want to get more commission right? Have them order from the store closest to them and leave it at that. As long as they get the right color and fabric, you should be good to go.

  • If it's the same store with different locations (DB for example) I don't think they would lie about fabrics being slightly different store to store, they don't really have a reason to and probably just wanted you know so you weren't surprised by it later.  Even if they were different fabrics though, would it really matter?  I doubt anyone would notice and it would be way easier for all if they were ordered seperately than trying to coordinate everyone schedules and travelling to one place.
  • Even if there were a noticeable difference in color between the dye lots while the dresses are hanging on a rack, it would be slight enough that differences in shadows and lighting when your BMs are standing in a line would cause it to be unnoticeable.

It may have been an issue decades ago, but it's really not something you should be concerned about - more of a bridal shop ploy to get your entire order rather than 1/3 of your order.
  • For my sister's wedding, she told us to get dresses in truffle from DB.  The five girls purchased from five different locations at five different times (including one purchase off eBay).  The colors were identical.  Stina is right, each store is trying to get you to purchase ALL of the dresses through them, and they'll tell you whatever they can get away with to try to accomplish that.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I was shocked when they told me and had my doubts. I thought every designer would manufacture their dresses using the same material. It was just interesting how 3 different stores told me. I'll just have the girls get the dresses from whichever place is most convenient. Thanks all for the input!

  • Also, most dyes are calibrated electronically.  Know how you get a can of paint from Home Depot and the guy gets a can of white paint and the punches a couple of numbers and it adds/mixes dye to get the right shade?  Same thing.

Dye lots were probably an issue back in the day, but is now just a way to get you to order your dresses today and one big order together.

  • You could also order from a wholesaler like netbride.com, rkbridal.com or pearlsplace.com, to save your girls some money. But you would probably have to get them shipped to one location (like your house, and then ship them to your girls), but it might save some money to have a local tailor alter them instead of a salon.

    Just a thought.

<div>I did this, and if you want to send them to each girl, the company will charge you $12 per separate address. </div>

  • Its prob a lie but I decided it was worth keeping the orders all together just in case there was a mistake and something was ordered incorrectly.  That way I keeo everything together and on the same timeline.  So, they will come in to a salon near me and I can just distribute to the other girls.  That salon had the best pricing of the dress (Alfred Angelo) but didn't offer alterations.  So, I figured I'd get the good price but then each girl can arrange her own alterations.
  • When I had to purchase a Bari Jay bridesmaid dress, the bride made me order it from a store by her (across the country) because she was told otherwise the dye lots would be different and we wouldn't match. It was a huge pain and her store was more expensive than if we had ordered off the internet.
  • Dye lots used to be a big problem but technology has improved with dying.  You really don't have to worry about dye lots anymore.  20 years ago, you would worry because if they were not all from the same cut of material you could have a big difference.  Nothing to worry about.  Send them each to wherever they want to go.  Just make sure if it's online that they are authentic.  A knockoff might not match...
  • Half of my bridesmaids were in different countries so I was in your boat. If you think it's possible for your girls to order their dresses from different stores (i.e. you're getting them from a chain like Alfred Angelo or David's Bridal) then I'd say that's probably fine. The boutique where we ordered our dresses had order forms on their Website organized by designer. I just saved the PDF, emailed it to all the girls and had them fax/mail/email the form back to the store themselves.

  • David's Bridal should not be a problem. I have the same situation with bridesmaids being from all over. No worries!
