Shoes

All of my bridesmaids have the same floor length satin dresses for my wedding.  Now the conversation is about their shoes.  Not everyone likes to wear heals.  One just had knee surgery and can't be in anything except for extremely comfortable shoes.  Is it ok for all of the bridesmaids to select their own shoes?  They shouldn't be seen, so I don't think it will be a problem.  Thoughts??

Re: Shoes

  • Of course it's okay for the BMs to select their own shoes!  The wedding police won't bust the place up if one wears heels and the other wears flats.  The general consensus on this board is that BMs should never be required to buy a specific shoe and, if they are, the bride should pay.

My BMs wore floor-length dresses and I just asked them to wear silver shoes in any style they wanted.  I honestly don't remember what shoes any of them wore, save for my sister, who wore a pair of my shoes.  That's how unimportant a detail it is.  I wouldn't have even given them a color but they bugged me for some direction so I just gave them something that was really broad and would allow them to either wear something they already owned or buy something in a style and price range they liked.

Good on you for not requiring specific shoes!

  • Having your BMs pick out their own shoes is perfectly fine. They don't all have to look alike down to the last detail, and like you said-the shoes won't be seen anyway.

I don't think anyone will walk away from your wedding and comment about how your BMs all have different shoes.

  • Perfectly fine and very thoughtful to let them get their own shoes.

Tell your friend good luck with her physical therapy that she'll be doing for her knee.  I had surgery on my knee 1 1/2 years ago.  After the PT ended and I had to keep it up on my own, I decided to try yoga.  That is what finally got me full range of motion in the knee again.  I still have to baby it sometimes but I was back in heels about 8 weeks after surgery.

  • It's DEFINITELY ok to do this. I did this and my girls were wearing knee length dresses. I honestly didn't care if people saw different styles of shoes.

My Married Bio updated March 4
  • I've never, ever noticed the bridesmaids' shoes at a wedding.

My two BMs each wore different shoes (with knee-length dresses) and not a soul commented on them. I didn't even see what shoes they picked until the day of the wedding. The world kept on spinning.

  • Since my girls are wearing floor length dresses, I'm not even specifying the color of their shoes.

  • Even if the shoes are visible, I don't think it's necessary for them to be matching.  If you want to, you can give some very basic guidelines (black close-toed, silver strappy), but honestly, if the dresses are long, they could be wearing hot pink galoshes and no one would ever really know.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
