to brides who had bridesmaids that selected their own dresses

Hi ladies!

I am considering the idea of having my BM's select their own dresses, as long as its a shade of purple and cocktail length.

How did you make sure that no girls ended up with the same dress or same shade of purple? I'm not sure how to handle this!

Thanks alot! :):)

Re: to brides who had bridesmaids that selected their own dresses

  • I did the same thing with black and full length dresses.  Everyone has such different tastes in clothing that it really wasn't an issue.  Everyone's dresses were TOTALLY different.

To be honest, I didn't really worry about it and I'm not sure how you would prevent it.  I don't think that it is a concern.  They will have so many options I'm doubting any of them would end up with the same dress.
  • I actually had each girl just try them on. My sis called a particular dress, and I held that style number info. A couple days later, I got an email from another bm saying that she wanted a particular dress and guess what, it was the same dress. So I told her, Oh my sis picked that dress. It's pretty popular.

And then the bm called a day later saying that she had changed her mind...so she made the change herself. I was a little worried about two wearing the same one, but because I had 4 bms and 2 would be wearing different dresses while 2 would be wearing the same and I didn't want people thinking that I had picked that one out for them to wear. But it all worked out in the end. PIB.

  • I polled my girls and told them they could either 1) each buy a purple knee-length dress of their own choosing, or 2) buy any knee-length dress in lapis from David's Bridal.

They decided amongst themselves to go the DB route, because they had so many dresses to choose from and they were all right around $120 or less, and they preferred the simplicity of just going there, trying stuff on, and ordering it rather than having to find something on their own.

At one point, two of my girls had chosen the same dress, but that ended up not working out, so they were all in different ones. My maid of honor and junior bridesmaid ended up wearing floor-length dresses. It all looked great. :)
  • I had the girls go with the same color from the same designer.  I asked them to show me their dresses before they purchased them.  They all ended up liking different dresses so I had no problem.

  • I gave my girls the option to pick whatever dress they wanted or seperates that were different.  When they went out together they picked the most beautiful dress and it flatters ALL of them.  That is great!
  • I picked the length, fabric, and color from Alfred Angelo, and let the girls pick the style.  I have 7 girls- 3 picked one dress, 3 picked another, and my sister, the MOH, picked one that is completely different.  I'm kind of surprised that's how it worked out, there were a lot more options available, but I like that it ended up this way- I'm going to alternate the girls in different dresses adn think it will look really good!

  • I think it's perfectly fine if some girls end up in identical dresses. If they choose something they like and they feel comfortable in, it won't matter. You could always add a sash or flower to one to make it different than the other.

I only had three girls, and they were 8, 17 and 30, so they all picked out completely different dresses, but it looked fine. If you have one cohesive attribute it's a great look for a simple wedding. GL!
