For those of you who recall, around 2 weeks ago I posted a thread requesting T&Ps for my pet hedgehog, Juniper. She was passing blood and also having trouble with movement. The vet thought it could be a UTI and prescribed an anti-inflammatory and 2 weeks of antibiotics.
Well, those didn't help at all. In fact, she continued to get worse. She began not eating, was lethargic, and on Thursday night, she could barely get up. So on Friday morning I called and made an appointment at the vet. I knew in my heart how things were going to end up...
The vet that examined her this time was more experienced with hedgehogs, and said that her trouble moving was due to something neurological (her movement was very uncoordinated). Also, lumps could be felt in her belly. Final diagnosis: tumors in her uterus and brain. Cancer is common in hedgies as they age. There was nothing they could do.
So we had to put her down. It was incredibly difficult. She was my first pet ever. My dad never let me have pets growing up, so I bought Juniper as my 21st birthday present to myself. She was with me for three years, and I loved her dearly.
On the way home, we stopped at a park and got a nice little rock to make her a headstone. I wrapped her in her favorite snuggle fleece, and we buried her next to a magnolia tree at my parent's house, in the spot where my mom is planning on planting a rose bush in the spring.
Rest in peace, my dear little hedgie.
