June 2012 Weddings

Check, check, & Wedding dress story

FI and I FINALLY decided on a photographer!  We confirmed with her that our date was still wide open, and the deposit & contract went out in the mail today!  I'm SO excited, and relieved that this decision is done with.  We went with the more expensive of the two we've been going back and forth between, because she has more experience at our venue, is a full-time photographer, and I feel relates to us better.  The money thing is causing a lot of anxiety for me, but FI keeps telling me not to worry about it, it still fits within our budget, and we'll be okay.

So spending a lot of time with my mother this past weekend going to wedding-related festivities led to us talking about a lot of wedding things.  I've recently booked my dress shopping appointments for the end of the month, and my mother is SO excited for them it's not even funny.  So she decided to start talking about her dress shopping experience.

My grandparents paid for my parents' wedding in full, and thus they took care of the dress as well.  My mother fell in love with a dress that was $100 over their budget, which my grandparents immediately vetoed because it was too expensive.  She did eventually find one that she liked that they were willing to pay for - but on Sunday, over 27 years after she'd gotten married, she can still describe in great detail the dress she had to say no to.

The moral of this story for me, is a) Know your budget and stay within it when you try on dresses; b) Have a serious discussion with whoever is paying for your dress, if it's not you, about just how much they are willing to spend; and c) If you fall in love with a dress that's a little over the budget that's been set for you, understand that walking away may leave you still wishing you'd had that dress almost 30 years later!

Re: Check, check, & Wedding dress story

  • I am paying for my dress on my own.  This could be bad though because I feel like my budget is very lax.  I want to keep it under $1,500, but at first i was waying under $1,000.

I feel like I will find a $3,000 dress I love and just end up buying it.  I almost wish I  had someone else buying so I would have to be more structured with budget.  It is WAY to easy to change it when it is my own money!
