NWR: FI Vent

So I was just on the phone with FI and I tell him I'm signing up for Weight Watchers.

FI: Why are you doing that?
Me: Because I want to lose some weight
FI: Well doesn't that cost money?
Me: Umm, yeah - about $10 a week
FI: Why don't you just do the diet that you were doing before (cutting out carbs)
Me: Because once I stopped it, I put it all back on.
FI: Well, just remember that money is a little tight right now (he hasn't work all week because he paints and his boss didn't line anything up).
Me: Uh, yeah, I know (I make sure all the bills are paid - note: FI does give me money each week).
FI: Doesn't that mean you'll be eating different things than us (FI and my son)
Me: Not necessarily. Just more veggies and stuff.
FI: Oh, well just remember about the money and all the wedding stuff we have to pay for.

Augghhhh!!! Doesn't he think I know about all of that. I don't get why he can't just be ok with it. I can save $10 a week by not buying something else to pay for this. And, I've actually been saving money using coupons so he shouldn't have any gripe about it at all.

Ok, vent over. Thanks for listening.

  • Bummer.  I can see where he is coming from moneywise.  You just have to show him how you are saving money to make up for the $10 for WW.  That might make it more tangible for him.  Maybe make a budget and include the weekly fee??

Also, if you sign up make sure you stick to it so you can show him that the money is well spent.  Maybe he won't mind as much if it works :)

    Good luck!

  • I'm sorry Kris that was a seriously jerk thing for him to say.  It shouldn't matter why you want to do it he should just be supporting you that you are trying to go forth with a healthier lifestlye.  Also, I get that money can be tight but like you said it's $10 a week and as long as everything else is paid I think it's ok.

  • Sorry he is being a butt head! Maybe you could research the guidelines of WW and do it on your own? I know there are a bunch of ladies on the GIS board that do it and could be your support. It would be free that way.

  • Moneywise, I know we are ok with the extra $10 a week.
Heck, if he quit smoking butts, that would save a ton but I don't say anything about that unless he asks me to stop at the store and get them while I'm out.

It's just the fact that he was so negative about the whole thing. :(

  • I think men sometimes have a hard time communicating their feelings. He probably feels stressed out he hasn't had any work this week and wants to make sure things can be paid for. Maybe he didn't mean to be a butt head but it came across that way. Just explain what you'll be cutting out to make up for the 10 bucks a week and he should be fine.

  • Definitely use this to your advantage, to get your butt in gear and prove him wrong!

<div>Ooh, if he smokes, I don't think he has a leg to stand on in this argument!</div>
  • Totally missed the smoking thing.  I'd call him out on that.  He's dumping money down the drain on something negative, while you are merely "investing" in something positive.  Start sneaking healthy stuff into their diets, I guarantee they will feel better about themselves, and maybe he will see the light.
