June 2012 Weddings

How far is too far

We went Monday night to map out the ceremony location. Some of you may recall we are walking down a trail to our ceremony location then finishing the trail to get to the reception.

The length of the whole trail is 0.47 mi. The ceremony is 0.25 mi from the trail head. Then (obviously) after the ceremony guests would have a 0.22 mi walk to the reception. FI feels this is way to far to have people walk.

In our invitation, we are including a map of the trail including distances. Guests that would prefer (grandparents and those in wheelchairs), we are taking them from the end of the trail backwards to the ceremony. That path is more level and has less of a decline.

Personally, I didn't feel like it was too far. Maybe too far in heels, but that is partially what the enclosure with distance information is for.

What do you guys think? Am I being unreasonable?

Re: How far is too far

  • Is there any way you can offer some sort of shuttle? Like a gold cart or something small like that that can be used for off-road type terrains. I would be kind of annoyed if I had to walk half a mile in my wedding guest attire (and shoes).
  • I like that you're including a map. At the end of the reception, then, will your guests have to walk the full 0.47mi back to their cars? That seems like a good deal of walking to me. I wouldn't think twice about it if I were out on a regular day, but if it's a wedding and I'm dressed nicely and carrying a present, purse, etc, it might be a little annoying. Is there any way to hire a tram and/or golf carts to give everyone the option?
  • Personally, I would not want to walk that far, heels or no heels.  And I run 6 miles a day.
  • Although I love taking walks, I feel that this distance isn't really in the best interest of your guests.  Is there a way you could shorten the paths or provide some type of tractor ride?  I don't think the guests should have to walk more than a few minutes to get to your ceremony and reception.

  • I agree with the PP's. In wedding day attire in is a little far to have to walk. I like the suggestion of using a golf cart.

  • I personally think it is too far. Especially at the end of the night if I have been up dancing and what not I would not want to walk .47mi. The golf carts would be a good idea.

Ha!  I read Kelsey's post and I am thinking what in the world is a gold cart?!  I was picturing some type of fancy little golden carriage fit for a princess or something...golf cart makes so much more sense!  :)

  • I agree that it is a little too far to walk. People will be in wedding attire plus the heat of it being the month of June.

Is it just a little path, like where it would have to be something like a golf cart? Or would like a van or something fit to transport people?

No, the reception is where they will be parking.

    Kelsey-What is a golden cart?
  • IMO, I think it is a little to far to walk in wedding attire and shoes.  If it was any normal day that wouldn't be a problem though.  I'd definitely offer some sort of transportation if possible.

  • I think it is a little bit too far to ask your guests to walk. Our guests will be walking a little bit to our wedding as well, but probably only .15-.25 miles. We are going to have golf carts for anyone who cannot make the treck.

  • We have about a .5 mile trail back to our ceremony location, as well (from parking/reception to ceremony) This is one of my biggest stressors and I'm not sure what to do. I think we are providing a shuttle to get TO the ceremony and then we will walk back to the reception in some sort of "parade" with all of our guests. We thought this would be a fun way to enjoy our first few minutes of husband and wife :)

I do believe it is too far to make them walk, both ways (and it's probably goint to be hot!)...especially for older people so if you do decide to do the walking thing, having an option for a cart or shuttle would be the best for people who just don't want to or physically can't.

My wedding planner also pointed out that if we have a shuttle for guests and they can see where the shuttle is going, some people will probably just walk that distance instead of waiting for a shuttle in a line of people....just something to think about.

  • Does anyone know if there are places that rent out golf carts? I do not want to buy one just for this one day...

I know that some golfcourses will rent out their carts, so that might be worth looking into. There are also places that rent out golf carts for events etc...but I think that varies from city to city. Try googling "Golf cart rental" City, state....with the golf cart rental part in quotes....otherwise you will just get general golf courses and car rental places :)

Everyone will be parking at the reception. The trail ends at the reception.
