NWR: Movie - "An Education"

I know TamTam and one other bride on here (maybe Philly Bride) recently saw the movie "An Education".  FI and I rented it based on you guys talking about it, and we really liked it!  It was weird at first, but once we got over the age difference, etc. it was a really good movie.

FI had initially said he wasn't going to watch that movie, but I put it on while he was in the room and he kept looking up from his laptop to see what was going on and finally he put the laptop down and focused solely on the movie.  LOL.  He loved it and even said "we should rent more movies like that".

So anyone else who is looking for an interesting movie to rent, check out "An Education".

Definitely!  That was the first thing I did when I moved to cincinnati.  I got that idea from my mama (aka Mrs. Frugal).  :)

I'm glad you and FI liked it.  DH did not like it and he didn't watch the whole thing.  He just could not get over the age difference.  He was so bothered by the fact that the this older man was after such a young girl.  He wasn't this appalled while watching The Reader though (did you see that one?).  So that lead to this whole discussion about how he has this double standard when it comes to male pedophiles vs. female pedophiles.  He disagrees that it's a double standard but I definately think that he sees one situation as being worse than the other and didn't recognize that the boy in The Reader was also victimized...but I digress.

I liked the movie.  There is a line in the movie that the lead character said that I just looove.  She said something like "It's not enough to educate us anymore, you have to tell us why you're doing it."  I love that because that's what I would have liked to have known at her age before I wasted so much money going to college.  My parents just told me that I had to go because I would have so many opportunities with a degree.  Years later I still want to know what it was all for.  Did I miss what I was supposed to truly get out of the experience?  Maybe I was after the wrong thing.  And what's really cool about that quote is that she was going to one of the greatest colleges in the world and she was still going to be so limited in her ability to take advantage of it because she is a woman.  I can relate.  I don't feel limited because I'm a woman but I do feel somewhat limited beause I'm African American.

LOL!  I just noticed my new siggy pic.  So funny.  It's supposed to be Angela Davis because she's my alter ego, but now it's a picture of this white girl!  LOL!

I may have to rent this, especially since the female in the movie was nominated for an Oscar for the role (I try to watch all the movies that receive nominations for that year).

Lcagirl, another good academy award nominated movie is Crazy Heart.  I think Jeff Bridges, the main character, won for best male or something.  DH and I just watched it a couple of nights ago.  I thought it was really good.

Keep jacking!  I want to talk about other movies to rent!  Tam, do you have any more suggestions?  Crazy Heart is on my list, but I haven't seen it at the library yet.  :)

Yes, that line from "An Education" you referenced is awesome.  It does really make you think.

FI and I just rented these three movies:
    - Ballast
    - Being John Malcovich
    - No Country for Old Men

I saw the last two and they were so good I would watch them again (FI hasn't seen any of them).

Cincy, the next on our Netflix list is Brooklyn's Finest, so I'll let you know how that goes.  DH looooooves No Country For Old Men.  I actually bought it for him as one of his birtday gifts last year.  Another movie that we rented that we really liked was Little Children.  I think Kate Winslet is in it.  If you haven't seen that one you should.  And I also liked The Reader even though I found it slightly disturbing.  Good movie though.  Oh!  And we recently rented Shutter Island with Leonardo Di Caprio.  A must see.  I can't think of anything else.  I'll ask DH.  He has very picky tastes though.

Thanks Tam!  I saw The Reader and really liked it.  I will look for Shutter Island, I heard that was good.  Have you heard anytihng about Takers (out in theaters now)?  I haven't heard a word, although it was apparently the #1 box office movie when it came out.

Really?!  Takers was not rated very high by critics.  I always go to Rotten Tomato to see what the critics say about the  movie before viewing.  I don't always agree but I can at least read the review and get a sense for whether or not it's my type of movie.  I wanted to see that movie though, but I'll wait until it hits Netflix.  The only reason I wanted to see it was because I wanted to see the cute boys.
