Hey everyone this my first post and I am going to kinda poor my heart out to all you random strangers....First Business - Any NJ Knotties here?  I am looking for thought on renting a venue and  having it catered.  I hae about 140 ppl (very tentative...will probably be closer to 100-120) I am not looking for financial, just how much of a pain was/is it...I am looking at the glenridge woman's clubhttp://www.womensclubglenridge.com/rentalfacts.htmland hoping to have a cocktail reception.On to the personal....So I live in NJ, FI is deployed, and none of my bridal party lives near me so I am rolling solo...I was kinda grump about this ....so I complained and whined a littleNow their way of helping me is suggesting all the stuff they like and think I should do...Why don't you use the favors/invitation/random other stuff I had from the wedding i was supposed to have...that has happened a few times...yes it will save money...but I don't like it...money be d##med....blahI have a wedding blog as my wedding book...here they go yeah I like you STD but I really like these other ones and all you have to do it ( insert random task that will take hours of work, and no one to help)No I just want them to stfu and go away...I'll send you and invitation so you know where to go in April...other than that we don't need to talk....ok I am done...sorry for the long post...blah....I thought this would be fun...eloping is looking better and better.

    I'm in the same situation (but FI is here) all of my wedding party & both our families live in other states so basically I'm on my own with the planning. The boards actually help. There's lots of people with good ideas and we'll share in your ups and down in the planning process and you can complain as much as you want.  Welcome to the AAW board hope we can help you find some fun in all this.

    Pheww... I can see why you needed to vent. Hi, I'm a NY Knottie but fi is from Jersey so I'm here now. When we were researching venues the Women's club of Wood Ridge (I believe that's the town) was the only place in Jersey high on our list. The rental fee was very reasonable. However, since we did not like the chairs/tables that they provided, it was our intention to rent new ones, in addition to paying for catering. After considering the full cost (and the fact that they would not let us take down some of the ugly decor) we realized that it was comparable to renting a fully furnished, staffed, and catered hall - at least for the event that we wanted. We took into consideration the whole picture: staff, set-up and clean up, drinks - alcoholic and otherwise, tips, and so forth, and realized that we didn't have the energy to create this wedding piecemeal. We wanted a lot less responsibilty on us and we're pretty much too lazy to put things together from scratch. It's definitely not impossible to do but it's something that we just did not have the time or patience for. GL!

    Same boat! Its not so easy trying to figure stuff out when FI is 5 hrs away and most of my family is even farther away. Just do your research. Not easy but it can be done! Good luck. It'll work out.

    Have to say thank you all....after I posted I had a good cry, picked myself up and realized I can do this.  I thought it would be fun, but it isn't and that is ok ...at the end of the day we'll be married and that is what is keeping me focused.So I went to visit my first venue.  Didn't like it but gave me something to think about.It is going to be ok...even if I have to give someone an elbow, lolThank you all soooo much....

    I am a Jersey knottie (Newark). I am originally from NYC so I have no clue as to where to look for venues. FI and I have been to 1 bridal show, the venue was nice but it's too far away. We saw a venue on Saturday, buffet meal $60 pp not incl. tax & service. We are planning for about the same number of guests. If you would like to have an ear that's nearby and going through similar woes, e-maill me.
