African American Weddings

I'm back with a recap (Pre-wedding)

So it's been awhile. The wedding was August 27th in the British Virgin Islands. We left NYC on Saturday August 20th and stayed at my husband's (yes I said my husband, lol) brother's beach front home for a few days before our guest arrived. It's a beautiful home with two balconies and I was looking forward to it.

Sunday August 21st Hurricane Irene hit. No cable, no power, no WATER!!! We had to put buckets out for water to bathe.

The same on Monday and Tuesday. Finally on Wednesday we got back the power and water and finally the cable. My mom was supposed to arrive Wednesday but her flight was delayed and she had to spend the night in St. Thomas. We planned to do wedding stuff that day but it had to wait. So I went to the resort and did the things that I had mailed ahead, like welcome baskets by myself.

The next day my mom arrived with my brothers as did all of my out of town guest. We had a welcome reception for his family to meet my family and to welcome our guest at the resort. No one from his family attended with the exception of his brother, wife and nephew that were staying at the resort because they live in Texas. His brother that we were staying with, his mom, his father, all MIA. Interesting but whatever!!!!

We had a rehearsal that same night and we weren't able to distribute gifts to his family. The whole week before the wedding we had to have pre-marital counseling for 2 hours per day for 5 days (the church and the hospital had power, water, etc via back up generators). The best thing we did in our relationship to date. Our Minister explained that we put so much time into school and our careers, as a former dancer I spent some much time perfecting my craft, however we hadn't done anything to prepare to be husband and wife. And he was right. He gave us an exercise that listed 15 things like: going to the movies, sex, our careers, having children, attending church, family prayer, etc. Then he asked us to list each in order of importance. And it brought us closer to see the differences and similarities in our individual perspectives.

The resort was absolutely beautiful!! When we arrived the general manager greeted us, a rep gave us a map of the resort, explained dining options, served us a drink then we went to our room (which was incredible).
