July 2012 Weddings

Something you may not know about me...

I just realized I may have never mentioned this before, but I am deaf and so is my FI.

The reason I mention this now is because we are thinking about what songs to have at our wedding (ceremony/reception) and we are completely lost. FI can barely hear, he has a hearing aid, I don't have any- I'm profoundly deaf, we use American Sign Language. And obviously we aren't able to listen to music (don't worry, it's okay since we don't know what we are missing!)

So can you ladies help us with some ideas for what songs to have? Any of your favorite ones? Any songs we shouldn't play? We are going to give our DJ a list of to play and to not play list (seems silly coming from deaf people!) and we have no idea where to start. All of our BMs are deaf too. All of our GMs are hearing and we will ask them for help too.

Afraid to ask our parents for help since their taste may be too "old fashioned"??

BTW if you ladies have questions regarding our deafness- feel free to ask away, none of the questions will be offensive! We have few things that we are a bit nervous about, like dancing to the music- so I predict I will have more questions about these kinds of things if you ladies don't mind :)

  • Wow really!?! i think it's great that youre willing to entertain our questions though i don't have any at the moment.

Andrea gave you a huge list to start. I would take the list to your BM's and ask for their opinion.

  • I second Please Don't Stop The Music-Rihanna for The Bridal Party music.

:o) If I think of any questions, I'll hit you up.

  • Wow, of course we never knew! My sister is not completely deaf, but can't hear with one of her ears and that is a pretty tough thing in itself. I'm always so full of admiration for deaf people who get ahead in life, because it is such a burden!

It is really hard to pick songs for someone else. Littlemoments gave you a great list: maybe you can read some of the lyrics and pick the nicest to make it personal, or select songs from soundtracks from favorite movies?

I findn it great that you're going through with the dancing, but I would imagine it is weird to something like that on your day when it's not something you'd ever pick for yourself. If the music is really loud, can you feel the 'trembling' from the dance floor? Maybe this is a really rude question, but what would you usually do on a party when it's just deaf people? (Probably hang around and talk, which is what I usually do because I'm not much of a dancer myself).

  • WOW! That's some list! Thank you so much, I'm saving it.

Any songs you ladies would recommend us to NOT play??

Elinetrouwt: your question made me laugh! Totally not rude at all. I've had strange questions asked like "do you read braille?" or "do you have voice?". In case you ladies were wondering: I don't understand braille and yes, I have voice :)

We have a DJ who has worked with deaf people in the past and he is going to include uplightings so we can see the "beats" from the lights and the bass should be high enough so we can feel the music.

A lot of my deaf friends enjoy dancing, one is even dancing seriously- she is majoring in dance in college. But I feel awkward on the dance floor until I have a drink or two! So that's why we are going to do some games with dancing instead of dancing all night long. We have some deaf friends who don't dance at all while others enjoy dancing. A lot of deaf people are able to hear a bit though and still be able to enjoy music.

A lot of deaf parties we go to- we talk a lot, updating each other since most of our friends live far away- while growing up, most of my friends lived at least 30 minutes away. Some of us like to dance, but we enjoy talking (well signing) more!

Our crowd at the wedding will be maybe 15-20% deaf people and the rest will be hearing (FI and I come from hearing families) so I'd like for my hearing guests to enjoy their night too :) Especially my dad who is so excited for the father/daughter dance!

  • "But I feel awkward on the dance floor until I have a drink or two!"

That has nothing to do with being deaf, I think that counts for the majority, including myself :-) I dance maybe once a year, my FI insists that he only dances at weddings (we have not attended one together before). Usually, I prefer smaller parties at someones home where you can talk.

I don't think there's a song that I would recommend not playing, based on the music alone. It's usually the lyrics that make it awkard. For some reason the song 'I'm not in love' has been very popular at weddings, and you don't need hearing to realise how weird that is. I would advise against Katy Perry, because I really don't like her, but that's such a personal thing ;-). But, if you have a list compiled, do come back and ask us again, we'll be sure to spot any no-go's.

  • I think Andrea definitely has this one already covered.  I haven't even though about it yet.  I usually need a few drinks to get up on the dance floor as well. I usually will get up there and dance but I'd rather go to a party anytime that is just hanging around for the most part.

    Anniversary
  • Oh thank you so much!!! Saving your list! (hope that doesn't sound creepy....)

I feel better knowing that other people are uncomfortable on the dance floor. Sometimes it feels like it's just because I'm deaf and people may be tempted to watch the deaf girl "dancing" to a song that she can't hear! But hey, as long as my dress covers my legs/feet- people can't really see how horrible I am!

  • my soon to be step daughter is also hearing impaired as well as FI's cousin..she has cochlear implants & they have made a huge difference for her..we have 2 boys together & because of the family history they recomended more testing for them but they have good hearing. I have had such a hard time w/ music, I may have to borrow some of the ideas!

That's amazing! How old was she when she got it? I'm glad it worked out for her! I have few friends who have them too. I don't have one though.
