People have always shot people (well, since the invention of the gun, I guess) and before that they stabbed people or strangling or poisoning, etc.

The cynic in me wonders if this would be such huge news if (a) it wasn't at/near/close to/within a ten mile radius of a huge national landmark and (b) if it wasn't in NYC...
