it's a website where artists, inventors, etc present their project, and people offer startup funds.

Yes. Our burning man camp is currently using it to get our art car to the playa. There are so few able to go this year, unless we do fundraising the big kitty won't be on the playa.

I think we have spoken about something similar about three years ago.

I don't think I would do this. I'm poor. My people don't give away their sh1t.

I've used it before, the concept seems really great.  Some friends of mine have a band in KCMO and they were trying to fund an ablum. If you made a pledge, you recieved a product, and the more money you gave, the better the product was. they didn't make it to their goal in pledges, which was sad, but then no one got charged since the album wouldn't happen.
